Mangalore: Obstructing police from discharging duties – accused sentenced

Mangalore, Oct 18: The second junior magistrate first class (JMFC) court here has found a person guilty of obstructing a policeman from discharging duties. Altaf Hussain (42), who was charged with obstructing Bunder police constable, Abdul Saleem, from attending to the work of video graphing events during the procession organized four years back at Kudroli Junction in connection of Maha Shivaratri festival.

When police constable, Abdul Saleem, was capturing the proceedings of the said procession on video as per the orders of higher officials on February 14, 2010, accused, Altaf Hussain and Mudassir, stopped him besides assaulting him. A complaint in this connection was filed in Bunder police station, and police inspector, Vinay Gaonkar, had registered the case, held investigation, and filed charge sheet in court.

Both the accused were released on bail, but Mudassir absconded. He never attended court hearings after being released from judicial custody on bail. Altaf, who cooperated with the judicial process, was found guilty by judge of the court, Roopashree Shetty, on October 17. He was sentenced to three months each of jail term for offences under sections 353 and 332 of Indian Penal Code. A fine of Rs 2,000 has also been imposed on him.

Assistant public prosecutor, Chetan Nayak, had presented the case in the court on behalf of the prosecution.
