Kasargod, Nov 7: Five persons have been injured as an indirect result of wild elephants’ attack in Mulleria.

Kannan (48) Anilkumar (14) Krishnaprasad (12) Sudhakara (13) Krishnaprasad (11) and another unidentified boy were injured. They all have been admitted to a hospital in Kasargod.

As per reports, the elephants appeared destroying crops after 10 pm on Thursday night in the estate of Rajesh Nayak. The people gathered, tried their best to drive away the animals. But when the wild animals turned wilder, there was no solution. The animals started chasing the persons who were later injured.

The injuries sustained were not direct, but indirectly caused as a result of falling down while running in panic. The incident took place at S T colony in Karingallu near Mulleria.

More than 6,000 areca trees, 1,000 banana plants, 100 coconut trees and also pepper and cocoa plants have been destroyed in the recent months by the wild elephants in the area. The farmers have lost lakhs of rupees in the form of destroyed crops.

The wild animals in the area have become a nightmare for villagers for the past few months. A group of five elephants was believed to have been involved in the destruction of plants and crops.

A team of forest officials had been trying to drive away the wild elephants to the nearby forest.  All the game plans and tactics adapted by them have failed so far.

Last month, a young elephant was found dead which is believed to be the part of the herd. But the on and off appearances of wild animals have continued.
