Urban Land Ceiling Act impeding Bengal's progress: Godrej

Kolkata, Dec 10 (IANS): West Bengal needs to do away with the archaic Urban Land Ceiling Act to keep pace with land reforms and attract industry, a top industrialist said here.

Underscoring the need for governments to give greater decision making power to industrialists and improve the competitive scenario, Godrej Group chairman Adi Godrej said: "The West Bengal government should do away with the Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulation) Act, 1976.

"Many states have done away with it and West Bengal was one of the few states to keep it. It is a not a good thing to continue with the act.

"We need to have a system where enterprises can decide on their own and minimise government intervention,", he told journalists Tuesday night.

His company is coming up with four more residential projects and an animal feed plant in the state and is exploring more opportunities in real estate.

Godrej did not disclose the market valuations of the projects or the investment that is being made.
