His companion, Ratan who also fell into the deep waters however, was rescued by the locals.

Background:

Dilip and Ratan who were the college-mates, arrived at the bank of the river, located close to their college when they had the free hour.  They were leisurely walking on the vented dam, when Dilip slipped while Ratan jumped to rescue his friend.  However, owing to strong current both were pulled into the deep waters.  Though Ratan was rescued, Dilip could not be saved.  All the efforts by locals went in vain. His body was finally fished out of the water in the evening.
