M'lore: Free Gastroscopy Camp inaugurated at FMMC

Mangalore, Nov 12: Hurry, curry and worry are the chief causes of stomach ailments.  One should give heed to ease tension and have relaxed mind, Prof Divakar Shenoy, head of department of surgery, Fr Muller Medical College (FMMC) said while speaking to this correspondent on the sidelines of ‘Free Gastroscopy Camp’, conducted by FMMC in collaboration with Syndicate Bank, FMCI branch, at FMMC and inaugurated by hospital director Fr Patrick Rodrigues here on Monday November 12.  The camp will be held up to Saturday November 17. 
 
People usually neglect stomach ailments, at initial stages but only rush to physicians when it is at the final stage. This is against medical advice as the complications persist and reach the incurable condition, he articulated.

People suffering from above referred complications are advised to consult physicians at the earliest.  This would enable the earliest diagnosis and prompt treatment. Moreover the crucial tests on bleeding and cancer formation can be avoided.  People who want to undergo preliminary medical examinations are advised to come on an empty stomach, so that physicians may reach better conclusion, he added.

Regular food habit, avoiding undue consumption of spicy substances and tobacco products, may reduce complications considerably, he advised.
 
No sooner the people become aware of the minor symptoms like heart burn, abdominal pain, they are advised to visit the physicians, in order to effectively control the disease reaching advanced stage.

The inauguration of the above camp was conducted at the out patient area of the Fr Muller Hospital.  After the invocation, Dr H Divakar Shenoy, welcomed the gathering.  Fr Patrick Rodrigues, in his inaugural address said that the people can make use of this free Gastroscopy camp to get their gastric ailment diagnosed.  He added that early diagnostic and prompt treatment is the best way to get rid of the diseases. 

Prakash Kamath, senior manager of Syndicate bank, which was the co-sponsorer of this programme addressed the gathering and said Fr Muller hospital has been rendering charitable service to the suffering humanity for the last 127 years.  He thanked the management for giving them an opportunity in doing service activities.

Dr V V Shindhe, gave detailed account of the functioning of the stomach, various diseases that can occur in the stomach, the usefulness of the gastroscopy in diagnosing various ailments and also its usefulness in treating some of the conditions like oesophageal varices, removal of foreign bodies and removal of small benign tumors. 

Dr Sathyamoorthy Aithala in his vote of thanks speech profusely thanked the Director, Administrator, Dean and the Syndicate bank for their support and encouragement to the surgery department in conducting such kinds of free medical camps for the benefit of the poor and the needy.

Swathi compered the programme. More than 50 patients have already registered for free Gastroscopy camp on November 12.
