Mangalore: Railway Issue - P V Mohan begins Hunger Strike

Mangalore, Nov 12: P V Mohan, convener of Mangalore Railway Fighters’ Federation, started hunger strike in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday November 12 along with several agitators.

Dr P L Dharma, director of Mahatma Gandhi Study Centre in Mangalore University, inaugurated the hunger strike by handing over the book ‘Nenapina Suliyalli,’ written by famous freedom fighter H S Doraiswamy to P V Mohan.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr Dharma said that, this hunger strike will be a milestone in the development of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district. Such kinds of protests can give a new meaning for the developmental path, he opined.

M B Abdul Rehman, president of Central Beary Parishat, said that Mahatma Gandhi used hunger strike as his ultimate weapon. The citizens of Dakshina Kannada are deprived of road or rail connectivity. The existing ‘Matsyagandha’ express train running on Konkan Railway (KR) route has been grabbed by vested interests from the neighbouring state of Kerala. Hence, ‘Dharma Yuddha’ (Peace war) has been started now, he asserted.

Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) leader P B D’Sa alleged that, the coastal area leaders like Oscar Fernandes and Janardhan Poojary seems to be sleeping now. They would have contributed a lot for the development of this coastal area, if they wished. But they did not do so. Hence, the citizens’ struggle for the justice will be continued, he informed.

Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, convener of Mangalore Railway Fighters’ Federation, said that Dakshina Kannada is one of the highest revenue generating districts in the state. But the district lacks such officials who are genuinely concerned about the development of this district, he expressed his concern.

At the same time, signature campaign was held. The protestors and general public signed on the flex banner to urge the railway authorities to begin Mangalore-Bangalore train services at the earliest.

Ibrahim, president of Mangalore Railway Fighters’ Federation, Ganesh Rao, Denis D’Silva and others were present on this occasion. V G Pal compered the programme.

    If at all Mangalore-Bengalore via hassan train starts, it is better to start it from Kundapur to Bangalore City Junction (SBC) instead of ending it at Yeshwantpur.

    I cannot understand, on what grounds is Mr.M.B.Abdul Rehman making allegations about Kerala's vested interest in Matsyaghanda Express? What exactly you mean by these allegations against Kerala.

    People from Mangalore and nearby townships like Udipi, Surathkal etc use the Nethravathy Express to travel short distances, nobody has raised any objection, after all its a service which any person can use irrespective of the fact whether they come from Karnataka, Kerala or T.Nadu or any other state for that matter. For any Keralite, the first choice is Nethravathy Express. When there is a direct train service to Kerala, why should they travel by Mathshyagandha express, okay even if they travel by Mathsyagandha express, is that people from Karnataka dont use the Nethravathy express to go to their respective destinations?

    We never or cant even think of making any comments on people from Karnataka travelling by Nethravathy Express because our community and the Kanadigas have great bonding, we have many friends in Karnataka, we also have brothers-in-law and sisters-in law from Karnataka. There so much of understanding and a give and take relation between us that such allegations from Mr. Abdul Rehman is simply not acceptable. He has to think at a macro level before making any allegations. Keralites do not have vested interests in any train, they have an interest to accomodate and help their counterparts .

    It is a shame that even after so many years and so much hur and cry the train has not been put on tracks. urge the concerned to take a decision immediately and start the train service immediately and thereby put an end to the hunger strike and agitations which is not required, since introduction of train service is for the godof people especially senior citizens who hesitate to travel by bus due to bad road.

    Mastyagandha should start from dadar/bandra. it should start in both directions at 19-20 or so to reach destination at 11. this will reduce the inconvenience of karwar, udupi etc. due to present schedule of dn. mastyagandha. i have already communicated this to Kr. Bangalore -mangalore train services via arsikere should start urgently with 3 pairs. two day trains and one night train. chennai mangalore train should ply via shorter bangalore-mangalore and to caliciut and karwr respectily.

    Mr. D'Sa is not correct in saying that Mr. Fernandes and Mr. Poojary are sleeping. Mr. Fernandes whenever he comes to Mangalore assures that he will 'look into' the matter. It may be that he may forget once he leaves Mangalore- after all amnesia is virtue of politicians. Regarding Mr. Poojary who said he is sleeping - just watch the so called " Mangalore Dasara" when whole of Mangalore is full of Posters, banners and what not.

    It is different that after hard work they are entitled to rest till next Dasara!!! When people are engaged in divine issues worldly things like train can wait. And so far our BJP friends are concerned they are seen in more numbers in religious pandals with God and they too have less time for Railway which is need of earthy creatures like us. With the majority they gained in MCC elections we were expecting a forceful agitation from them for Railways but they are also maintaining stoic silence. So it is good that common has started the fight now.
