Udupi, Feb 9: A Mahindra Scorpio car without any registration number plate which came from the direction of Harikhandige at great speed hit the car belonging to Sri Laxmivarateertha Swamiji of Shirur Math before speeding away. The accident happened near the entrance to Shirur Math at around 12.30 am on Thursday February 8.

The right side of Swmaiji's car was damaged in the incident. In a complaint filed at Hiriyadka police station, driver of Swamiji's car, Prasad, suspected that the car which hurriedly escaped would have been used for cattle trafficking.

A few days back, some cows from the cattle shelter maintained by Shirur Math had been stolen. As the vehicle carrying these cows met with an accident, the police had handed over the cows back to the Math. Some have suspected that the same gang of thieves would have been involved in the current accident.
