Chitradurga, Jan 11: The Government School of Nursing held a ‘Lamp Lighting Ceremony’ at Rangamandir here on Saturday. T. Dileepkumar, president of the Indian Nursing Council (Government of India), was felicitated on the occasion.

Retired director of the Health and Family Welfare Services Dr. M.T. Hemareddy said on the occasion that there were nearly 1.5 lakh jobs for English-speaking nurses in western countries. About 10 lakh nurses will be required in India and abroad in the next few years. To meet the demand, the Government has increased the budgetary allocation for nursing education considerably over the years, he added. He said nursing profession was a noble one because it involved serving patients in need of care and attention.

“Nurses should render service selflessly and with a great deal of humanitarian concern”, he said.

He expressed gratitude to Mr. Dileepkumar for striving at the Government level to get this college granted for the backward district.

In his address, Central Silk Board chairman H. Hanumanthappa said that owning to some “rigid rules” framed by the State Government in granting nursing colleges, people were not coming forward to open new colleges though there was an enormous need for nurses in hospitals.

“The present colleges are not able to produce excellent students in the absence of adequate staff and infrastructure. Both, the Union and the State Governments should strive to provide better facilities to these colleges”, he said.
