Udupi, Feb 6: A meeting to pay tributes to Shambhu Hegde, veteran Yakshagana artiste who breathed his last recently, was held at Yakshgana Kala Ranga of Udupi on Wednesday February 4.

Just like the classical status accorded to Bharatnatyam and such other art forms, Yakshagana should also be conferred similar status. The Yakshagana artistes must also be eligible to receive the recognition and respect on par with other artistes, felt one of the followers of Shambhu Hegde, sharing the dream of the late veteran on the occasion.

The art form which is presently divided into different styles like Tenku, Badagu, Bada Badagu etc., must be merged together to enable Yakshagana to be identified as one of the supreme art forms, he argued.

Hiriyadka Gopal Rao, senior Talamaddale artiste, Prof M L Samaga, Uppangala Rama Bhat, Vidyananda Acharya, K G Manjunat, Tallur Shivaram Shetty, president, Yakshagana Kalaranga, Murali Kadekar, secretary, Udaykumar Shetty and others spoke  on the occasion, reminiscing the services and contributions made by  the late artiste-cum-organizer and their experience of knowing and working with the late Hegde.

Bhagawat and Saligrama Makkala Mela convener Sridhar Hande compered the programme.
