Mangalore, Apr.16:
A trailer carrying new cars to the showroom was burnt heavily in a freak fire accident at Kaikamba near Kulshekar here on Friday April 17 afternoon. There were five Maruti Omni and one Maruti Swift cars which too were gutted in the tragedy.

The trailer belongs to Vivek Transport and has been registered in Haryana (HR 55 G 1630).

The trailer which was moving out from the city caught fire after it accidentally came in touch with a live wire. At first the driver did not notice the fire. It was only when smoke started emanating from the trailer that he stopped it near the petrol pump at Kaikmba and with the help of the locals informed the Kankanady police station which is just at a stone's throw distance from Kaikamba circle. Police informed the fire fighters.

Since the fire was inside the trailer, it took long time for the fire fighters to extinguish it. Finally when the fire was doused, cars were brought out from the trailer truck. While the Swift car was almost reduced to ashes, three out of the five Omni cars too were heavily burnt. However the trailer truck did not suffer major damage.

The trailer truck driver and his assistant too escaped unhurt in the tragedy.

The trailer truck with a capacity of carrying six cars is much higher than other trucks. Hence they usually ply on highways. The driver of the trailer speaking to Daijiworld correspondent said that the cars were being taken to Maruti showroom at Padil. But it is quite mysterious as to why did he choose a narrow Bikarnakatta-Maroli road instead of National Highway 17.  Some locals were of the opinion that the driver might have lost his way after being misled by someone on the way.

Though the total loss has not yet been estimated, it could be anything between Rs 8 to 10 lac, said some locals.

It is good to help no one is against it certain awareness is necessary every body will be agreeing with it until something goes wrong then the same people will be saying "they know there is gasoline there and it will explode, why did they go near it fire fighters are there they know better".

Thank god nothing worse has happened cars can be manufactured again but not loss of life whoever thinks basic safety is not necessary is a moron himself.

All the Photos really show the wisdom of Mangalorean Fire dept. and the Public around the truck. There is a Truck fire which has vehicles inside. Truck had huge Gasoline tank with Petrol in it. The vehicles inside have Gasoline tank on them too, even though they might not have lot of Petrol in them. Then there are Batteries on each Vehicle. All these are explodable and flamable, and the Public gathered in hundreds around the truck. Then there is fire fighters who do not even care about this at all. If there was an blast, firemen would have had lot of action in their hand to fight. Real smart people live in City of Knowledge. Mr Victor Castellino, you have said it absolutely correct. Mr.Ranjit you are wrong on subject. Victor is 100% correct, okay. Public is not trained to fight fires. Get some knowledge on Public safety. This is Hazard fire and not your house fire, where frying pan is burning.

good job by locals and fire fighters, but the prime cause for this is the mescom dept, they leave their wires hanged very low in every place and in the name of maintainance we have power cut for a whole day and the maintainance done is 6 people join to gether and cut one feet of a branch of a tree so that next week it grows and then it will be ready for next week, no proper maintainance is done as the higher authorities are not bothered, mescom is just time pass

People, police, firemen should Be reasonably intelligent after all the years of experience they get fighitng similar incidents. Although it was a good job done by whoever concerned/involved, next time in such closed compartments, containers, rooms, use teargas or similar substance to restrict oxigen supply to that area. Damage will be much lesser or many be negligible!!!

the car dealers have chosen areas around nanthoor and some other bylanes as their vehicle unloading spots from the trailers. this leads to lot of inconvinience to the local public. this driver was neither mislead nor he was misguided. he was on his right route to the place of unloading on that area.

What a pathetic scene! I do not see a single police man cordening off the area to protect the public from any explosions that may occur. The firefighters do not have any proper firefighters' gear to protect them from heat or protect their eyes from flying debris.A man is climbing a ladder without having a safety helmet! Smoke is bellowing out from the containers and people are approaching it without wearing oxygen masks! Untrained public helping the fire personnel to exstinguish the fire endangering their lives! The burning truck is parked near a petrol pump!!! Are we in the 21st century or in the middle ages? It beats me!
