Haveri, Aug 15: A police constable, who had been washed away by the floods in River Varada along his motorbike could save himself from certain death as he had his cellphone with him at that time. This information has come as a ray of hope amidst various negative stories of youngsters getting lured towards other activities by the use of cellphone, falling prey to games, losing life when walking on the road when hearing music with the help of earphones, dying when taking selfie in risky spots etc.

Yallappa Koravi, police constable of Kaginele station in Byadagi taluk in the district was stuck in the middle of floods at midnight for four hours. He was holding on to grass. He held his cellphone high with his hand, and called his friends repeatedly with a request to save him. The police and firemen got into the act, searched for and spotted him, and rescued Koravi before it was too late.

Yallappa, after his duty hours at around 10 pm on Tuesday, was going to his native place, Santhehiglu in Laxmehwar taluk in Gadag district, to see his mother who is ailing of heart-related problems in his motor bike. His bike got stranded when moving on the bridge between Karjagi and Kalakoti. He was washed away along with motor bike due to the force of water that was flowing on the bridge for about 500 metres before he could hold on to thick grass. He called his brother in law and friends over phone, duly asking them not to inform his mother about his condition. Firemen from Haveri and Savanur brigades, policemen and locals found his location, used a boat and rescued him at around 2.30 am on Wednesday.
