Udupi: Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre celebrates first anniversary

Udupi, Oct 25: Kasturba Hospital and Kasturba Medical College Manipal held the 1st anniversary celebration of Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre (MCCC) on Thursday, October 24 at Dr TMA Pai auditorium, KMC Manipal.

Dr Shailesh Shrikande, deputy director, Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai was the chief guest of the programme. Shrikande said that there had been a lot of progress taking place in the field of medicine in a decade and much more progress will take place in the coming days. He congratulated Navina and Nawaz, the surgeons for their achievements and dedication. He was happy that in a year KMC has surgical oncology and that too 10 tumour boards were present. “I am very much keen to know the progress of KMC,” said Shailesh Shrikande. He also said that surgeons must be satisfied and happy within so that they can radiate and transmit the same to the patients. Sky is the limit for your work. You are as good as your last operation and you are as good as your last patient’s treatment. Results are always measured by your patients’ condition and how well you treated them. People often say this is a competitive world. But this world is so beautiful and its beauty can be enjoyed when we love our work,” he said. He concluded his speech stating that today there had been lot of technological advancements. But it is the humans who play a vital role behind those technologies.



Dr Vinod Bhatt said, “Today we can witness different types of cancer emerging every year. That too younger age groups are affected more. Due to advance technologies, we could declare cancer victims free of disease in the coming days emphasizing that they undergo proper treatment at proper time. ‘All Women CANCER Care Team’ has been formed in KMC where all women surgeons will treat lady patients in cases of breast cancer and female genital care.”

H S Ballal, pro chancellor of MAHE presided over the programme. Addressing the gathering, he said that if most cancer are treated early they could be detected and cured soon. He also mentioned about quality of life and stressed that it must be given utmost importance. He also remembered the walkathon which was conducted recently in Udupi and said that palliative care treatments are given in KMC and proper care and emotional support is given to the patients which makes KMC different from other hospitals.

Dr Poornima Baliga B, pro-vice-chancellor, faculty of health sciences, MAHE Manipal, Vasanti R Pai, trustee of MAHE Manipal, Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, KMC Manipal, Dr Sharat Kumar Rao, dean, KMC Manipal, were present.
