Udupi: Legal cases against ineligible BPL ration card holders

Udupi, Oct 26: Even though ineligible BPL card holders were asked and warned several times to return their BPL cards to concerned department, only 665 card holders have returned their BPL cards on their own and those cards are cancelled.

As many as 256 BPL card holders owning four wheeler are identified with the cooperation of transport department and legal action is being taken against them.

The details of more ineligible BPL card holders are being gathered. They are allowed to return their BPL cards before October 31. The ineligible BPL card holders found by the department later will be made to pay for the ration items bought by them at the current market rates as fine. Criminal cases will also be registered against them under relevant Act of 1977 meant to prevent holding unauthorized ration cards and under Indian criminal procedure code 420, stated deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha in a press release.
