Mangaluru: Heavy rain in coastal Karnataka - Mescom suffers losses

Mangaluru, Oct 30: Many areas in coastal Karnataka received good rain coupled with copious thunder on the evening of Tuesday, October 29.

After rainfall that continued for several days, there was a lull of two days before rain appeared on Tuesday. Some areas also experienced lightning and wind.

The city, as well as Puttur, Beltangady, Bantwal, Sullia and Subrahmanya got good rainfall. Beltangady and Venoor experienced rain on Tuesday evening.

Some parts of Udupi district got normal rainfall on /Tuesday night.

A wall of provision store being run by Anand Shetty at Bachakere in Maninalkoor village in Bantwal taluk crashed. Even the terrace of the building is facing peril now. Provisions inside the shop soaked in rainwater, inflicting loss of thousands of rupees. The mud walls of the adjacent house are also facing danger.

Due to heavy rain and wind, several electric poles fell to the ground in Uppinangady. A coconut tree fell across the car street after lightning hit, and power cables lay scattered. Because of strong wind, several trees also fell. After the sheet of cracker shop being run by Satish Kamath on Upplinangady Bypass road flew away, the shop suffered the loss of about three lac rupees. But the shop employees escaped unhurt.

As the meteorological department has predicted chances of the low-pressure area in the atmosphere turning into cyclone near Lakshadweep and move on the route Kyarr took, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Kerala and Tamil Nadu may experience heavy rainfall till October 31, the department predicted.

If it happens, the standing paddy crop of scores of farmers that have fallen to the ground due to Kyarr, and which the farmers were expecting to become dry in the sun, might get destroyed and cause them heavy losses, the farmers are afraid.
