Bengaluru: BJP, Congress fight for spotlight over 'Kannada' rule in schools

Bengaluru, Oct 30: Both BJP and Congress locked horns on Tuesday when it came to taking credit for making Kannada mandatory in schools.

The verbal combat initiated when BJP in Karnataka tweeted claiming, the government of B S Yediyurappa was responsible for making Kannada compulsory in schools. Responding to the claims, Congress claimed that it was possible when Siddaramaiah was the chief minister.

"Kannada is supreme in Karnataka. Chief Minister has taken a decision to make Kannada compulsory in all schools. Schools that will not make Kannada mandatory will lose their recognition," the BJP tweeted.

A response to which followed a tweet by Congress in the state, "Siddaramaiah had made Kannada mandatory during his tenure itself. Implement the rule as it is and try to make it more effective. Stop lying."

As per the Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015, Kannada should be compulsorily taught in schools. However, a recent CAG report showed that most of the Bengaluru schools have still not implemented the rule.
