Mangalore: Heggade Stresses Need for Common Dress Code

Mangalore, Aug 19 : Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala D Veerendra Heggade has stated that a common dress code should be there in educational institutions.

“Uniformity in dress gives a different ambience in the classrooms. It reflects both social and economic equality,” he said during a Meet the Press programme organised by DK Union of Working Journalists at Patrika Bhavan here on Wednesday.

“Religion is something personal. It should be practiced in home. It should not come in between the social life,” Heggade said.

Answering a query on the incident at SVS College in Bantwal, he said: “You should not generalise an action taken by a principal. If an incident is reported from somewhere, it does not mean that such a trend is there everywhere. It is a rare incident.”

River diversion

Replying to a query on the Nethravathi river diversion project, Heggade opined: “It is an unscientific effort”.

The authorities who envisaged the project have failed to give its complete details to the people. Even the engineers concerned who visited Dharmasthala a few years back tried to convince us, but were not in a condition to give sufficient proof as to how it works, he explained.

SEZ a good concept

Heggade said special economic zone is certainly a good concept but questions arise only on the pattern of its implementation.

“Changes are inevitable in the economic scenario for the development of any country. It requires concentrated efforts,” he said.

RUDSETI nationwide

Inspired by the development model envisaged by the Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute (RUDSETI), the Central government has passed an order that the branches of RUDSETI should be established in all districts. A RUDSET Academy has been established in Bangalore an year ago, funded by the Centre, Heggade informed.

The State government has agreed to allot 5 acre-land in Bangalore for the academy’s campus, he added. He said the 24th branch of the institute will be opened at Rajasthan soon.

Banking in villages

Heggade said the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) has initiated banking correspondence model in Dharwad, Gadag and Haveri.

“In this model, there will be a direct transaction between the bank and the beneficiary. The bank representative will take laptop to the villages and encourage the people to open their accounts. They are registered through biometric system and are given smart cards,” he explained.

The SKDRDP has more than 11,50,000 members in 9 districts. As many as two lakh members have enrolled with the project in the last six months. The new type of banking will be gradually expanded to other districts, he said.
Answering a query, Heggade said the SKDRDP will be extended to Hyderabad-Karnataka region in course of time.

Tulu convention

He said the world Tulu convention to be held at Ujire from December 10 will not just be a conference of Tulu language and literature but will be a forum to discuss the blueprint for the integrated development of the region.

Asked about his opinion on the inclusion of Tulu in the VIII Schedule of the Constitution, he said the people who speak a lot about the issue have not done much to show that why the language should be included in the VIII Schedule.
DK Union of Working Journalists President Harsha and General Secretary Guruvappa T N Balepuni were present.

Just because of one girl the entire educational establishment in Mangalore has shaken. Uniform dress code is a good idea but it is boring too. College life comes only once in a lifetime and wearing clothes of our choice adds color to life.

Dr Veerendra Hegde is a well respected man. His remarks are basically meant to avoid confrontation and smooth running of institutions. This girl has unnecessarily created issue. Few other Muslim girls in Western countries have also created similar incidents misusing the liberty for personal motives and drawing attention to gain public sympathy.

It is totally unfair. You live in a democratic and secular country and want to practice your rigid customs and put everyone in trouble because you cannot adjust with the rest. Lot of young men and women living in rigid Islamic countries want to break free and live in total freedom in liberal countries. Some people have taken our liberty for granted.

Mr Heggade, sorry, please keep this advise to yourself. Now you have quoted in the context of muslim female student. Would your comments are the same if a sikh student is asked to shave off his facial hair, trim his head hear and not wear the head gear. I am sure you would have come in his defense. Why double standards dear dharmadhikariji....

Dr.Heggade is an unique personality with whom we can see a combination of character, wisdom, knowledge, charitable zeal and concern for the society. His poverty alleviation schemes such as rural development schemes are worth emulating worldwide. I am proud that I could study in one of his institutes and I wish him a long and healthy life.

It is his humbleness that he attended a press conference in Mangalore Press Club instead of calling press people to Dharmasthala. It is unfortunate that media people dragged him to the burning topic of SVS College incident. I fully agree with respected Dr.Heggade’s advice that uniform dress code in the institutions can solve any controversies in religious matters and also agree that religion is personal. But I disagree to agree with Dr.Heggade’s view that “ religion should be practiced at home”.

My view is that for a religious minded person whether Hindu, Muslim,or Christian, religion is part and parcel of life and should be practiced in and out. Religion cannot be separated from life and used whenever required. I strongly believe that first of all religion is a state of mind and that is what I learnt during my three years stay at Sri Siddavana Gurukula run by Sri Dharmasthala.

I fully agree with Ms. Eulalia Dsouza, Bijai / Mangalore. Wearing a scarf no one is telling to follow ones religion, and Muslim girls used to cover their heads even before that time no one made a big issue then why now? This BJP/RSS they have problems in every minority. What is bad in covering the head? Or how does it disturb someone? Wish our leaders would concentrate more on the other important issues i.e. water / electricity shortages, bad roads etc. instead of concentrating on these petty issues.

With due respect to Dr. Heggade, uniform has been & still is a part of the schools for years together & is well appreciated. But Muslim girl students were and are still wearing a head scarf to school / colleges also from those many years. Why has this issue come up now, when BJP is in power in our state ?

With due respect to our government, I wish to express my views on this: if BJP & RSS have a problem with muslim dress code and with jeans and Western out fits, what does one wear? Why has this issue been raised now, after so many years of colleges being in existance. Didnt these colleges have any muslim girl students all these years ? Why wasnt it then that they were allowed to wear head scarfs? This is NOT France / UK that we impose such rules? Let us appreciate other colleges where Muslim students still come with a scarf & are allowed to continue studies..

I think BJP has a problem with everything that doesnt fit in their selfish agenda.. Come on leaders concentrate on your good governance & stop wasting time on these petty issues to get wrong publicity.

Educational istitutions is the place of education, & it shouldn''t be made place of ones own religious belief. The best way is to keep away religious dress code, as wearing burkha/scarf, shabarimala dress , etc. away from regular classes. Hats off to you Mr. Veerendra Hegde

Practicising religious dress code in Educational institutions would create more problems than enjoying personal belief. Tomorrow, people may come wearing mundu & shawl, sarees, as they feel it to be tradition, or may come with shabarimala dress code if his vrathadhari. Morever, it is the student who should think before joining & not blame after joining.  Every college has its own regulations & students with like mindedness can join it. You have rightly said it Mr.Hegde.

I wouldnt suggest uniforms in colleges because I still remember the joy I experienced when I joined college wherein I neednt have to wear the uniform, which I used to do for 10 long years in school, but in this case I absolutely agree with Sri Veerendra Hegde. Its better to introduce uniforms in colleges so that there wont be any problem, of this sort, in the future. "Na rahega baans, na bajega bansuri."

Couldn`t agree with you more, Mr. Heggade, on your comments on the various issues, specially, on the common dress code to be followed in the educational institutions. Wearing different garments and outfits to suit individual tastes and religious needs means going backwards to hundreds of years! With your permission, Sir, I would like to repeat your statement : Religion is something personal. It should be practised at home. It should not come in between social life.
