Mangalore, Sep 22: The notification stating a decision to convert the road adjacent to the Kadri Park or Kadri Park road to a four-feet pathway by the district administration has signaled acquisition of 105-acre-land for tourism development. It is feared that over 400 residents of the surrounding area will be thrown to streets with the acquisition.

The notification issued by district administration through tahsildar of taluk says that the road adjacent to the Kadri park beginning from the circuit house and that joins national highway at Padua will be converted into a four-feet pathway. The notification which is published in state gazetteer also states that the existing road is not useful to public. But implementing notification means many residents of the surrounding areas will lose approach road to their houses.

The residents also inform the notification is one of the basic plan that will lead to the conversion of the area into a tourism spot. According to local resident, M M Joshi the project entails acquisition of certain areas of Nantoor, Kadri, Mundan, Kaibattal and Bejai. The area has a waterfall, a natural spring, monuments of historical imprtance such as Seetabavi, Parashurama dhuni, Pandavara guhe and Jogi mutt. Residents allege that to commercialize these historical places, district administration has planned to shift the residents of the area. If the notification is implemented, then nearly 200 houses will lose their approach road, they added.

Kadri area is well known for water. The pond in the area is one of the sources for water used by the tankers that supply water to the various areas in the city that face water shortage during summer, said Achyuta, a resident and added that the Jogi Mutt and Jumadi, place of worship of a spirit revered in Tulunadu in the area too will lose their approach road if the project is taken up, he added.

Swarnasunder, businessman from the area said that road approach is crucial during emergerncy. If the road is turned into a four-feet pathway, emergency services such as ambulance will not be able to ply, which means the notification sends a wrong message to public, he said alleging district administration as anti-people.

The residents under the leadership of eminent advocate Tony Fernandes have now formed an organization called Kadri Residents’ Association. Residents of the area under the association further have decided to fight against the anti-people decision of district administration. As a step towards opposition to the project, some of the residents have already submitted objections and also decided to submit a memorandum to Governor H R Bharadwaj, who is scheduled to visit the city.

Leader of opposition in Mangalore City Corporation K Harinath, Corporators D K Ashok and Roopa Bangera have also joined hands with the residents and expressed anger against the plan by district administration.

Madhusudan Gautham, an entrepreneur said that the road should not be converted into a pathway. The closing of an existing road is really a foolish decision, he adds. Tony Fernandes said that the association will fight till the district administration cancels the notification. The administration should try to understand the inconvenience caused to the residents of the area, if not we will take up a fight in a legal and peaceful manner.

Kadri is one of the beauty of mangalore, rich in water, trees and many other natural gifts. It is one of the place to be saved from the eyes of District administration. Plenty of old trees in the city are been cut in the name of city development. Now the city is losing its nature. We need to stop it. Let's wake up....

If people want good governance then you have to join together and bring in leaders who have a vision for the region and the people, not on caste and religion.

Hats off to the Mangalore city corporation on finding new ways of making life even more difficult than it is, for the residents of kaibattal. Why don't they develop the Kadri Park first, before removing an existing road that people have been using for decades! The road from the Jogi Mutt to the valley below, which was constructed after a great deal of effort by my late dad, has now been neglected and the corporation has done nothing but make promises on repaving the same!

This is nothing but a cash grab by some greedy officials in the name of developing Mangalore tourism. Why haven’t the pandava caves or the springs been protected before? These are ancient remains that should have been saved years ago, why have they woken up now? I am disgusted with the apathy that is constantly shown by this corporation and it is embarrassing that they call what they do to our beautiful city

After very long time Pandava steps discovered in the area. This is a very much advanced area mostly oocupied by Christian community. In Mangalore almost all ancient structures of the Brittish era are being destroyed in the name of development. The State Bank area Government structures could be given a face lift instead with the help of money spent on this kind of projects.

All over the world govts. are widening or putting in new roads. Looks like we are moving backwards by converting existing road into a pathway. In the developed world they would call a meeting of all the people living in that area and get their opinion whereas in Magalore they unilaterally take decisions that affect the common man.People have lived in that area since over 100 years.Where do you want them to go now? Please think before you act.

Citizens need to be active and stand up to these foolish measures. Our twin districts of Mangalore and Udupi are being destroyed by these politicians who operate to placate the land mafia than the people they are supposed to serve.

There is no drinking water being supplied, yet our politicians are setting up power plants and chemical industries further destroying our delicate ecology. Our place is beautiful as it is we do not need these artificial gardens from our politicians. God save our nation from our leaders.

Has anything good other than foolish been done by the present administration in the name of development. Under such administration there is bound to be an increase in the number of Associations and Samitis fighting to save our enchanting "KUDLA".This will help very little. All We must do is to throw out this administration with a single resolve.

Its a foolish decision by the District adminstration (previous DC maheshwar Rao's foolish plan). The Jogi Math area has already been destroyed and ancient stone Inscriptions are lying carelessly. The sita Bhavi footstep has been covered by concrete. Restore these things first instead of trying to block roads and making gardens and displacing people. There are so many places that actually need to be restored and can be turned into tourist attractions and the govt should look into them instead of displacing people inside the city. There are so many hill caves in DK district and all cannot be pandava caves.I beleive they were dug for tapping springs in the hill lock since it was easier to dig than wells. Why cant the Officials look into Karinge or Narahari Parvat, these are very attractive tourist spots.
