Udupi, Sep 22: State energy minister K S Eshwarappa inaugurated 220 kilovolts electricity transmission network between Kemar, in Karkala taluk and Udupi Power Corporation (UPC) distribution network at Nandikoor, near here, on Tuesday September 22 morning.  The inaugural function was held at Kemar sub station.

Minister Eshwarappa, speaking at the occasion, said that the state requires nearly 10,500 mega watts of electricity, out of which 7,000 mega watts are being generated through conventional means of energy resources.  Meanwhile, the state has before it, the target of generating 9,000 mega watts of electricity through unconventional means.  Several private enterprises specialized in generating electricity through unconventional means have expressed their interest, in executing these power plants.  Various permissions granted to 58 companies in the past for power generation, have so far been cancelled, he said.

The proposed thermal power plant with a capacity to generate 4,000 mega watts of power at Tadadi, in Karwar, Uttar Kannada, has been shelved, and a gas-based power plant, at a cost of Rs 400 crore in 600 acres of land, will be set up there.  Three thermal power plants with a capacity of 700 mega watts each will be commissioned here within the next three years, he added.

Discussions will be held with union environment minister Jairam Ramesh, on the environmental issues that are hindering the execution of the proposed Gundia power project.  The electricity requirement of Karnataka will be fully met by the state in the next 10 years, to achieve self sufficiency,  as far as power generation is concerned, he asserted.

The first phase of UPC will be commissioned by Mar 10, 2009. The agreements are being signed to set up a power plant at Koodagi in Bijapur, with a capacity to generate 4,000 mega watts of power.  Thermal power plants will be set up at Jevargi and Gataprabha in Gulbarga. The support of the citizens in this regard is utmost essential, he emphasized.

MLA Gopal Bhandary, Udupi zilla panchayat (ZP) president Gladys D' almeida, deputy commissioner Hemalata, ZP member Savita Shivanand, Karkala taluk panchayat president Uday Kotian, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) officers Pratap Kumar, Gurusripada and Vasant were present on the occasion.

The present transmission line with a length of 22.7 kms has been executed at a cost of Rs 33.21 crore. The company is in the course of installing another line to Shantigrama, at a cost of Rs 396.39 crore.

These days people protest for everything proposed by the govt. For some it is like an addiction. People protest against the govt when there is no power. The same people protest when the govt proposes a new power project. Today, thermal power is the cheapest next to hydel power. Those protesting say govt has to set up gas based plants. But they again protest when there is some increase in power rate. These protesters have no problem using power generated in Raichur. It is like I want the fruit but the tree should be in somebody else's backyard! How can that be possible. everybody should share the burden for the development.

I don't recollect whether it was Deve Gowda or Kumaraswamy who said it. When asked why govt is insisting on setting up Thermal plant in Nandikur and why not in Hassan their answer was "Send us the sea and port to Hassan and we will set up a plant there" It is common sense folks. Nandikur is near to a large port to receive imported coal from ships. Tadadi was changed for environmental reason. What environment we have in Nandikur?

There are hardly any dense forest left here like in Uttara Kannada. Exotic animals we have in Nandikur area are peacocks and may be nai pili! Tadadi and Nandikur comparison is like apples to orange comparision. Those who insist on gas based project don't realize that we have to reply on International price for gas prices which fluctuates a lot unlike coal. Why be at the mercy of fickle Arab states for gas when we have our own coal reserve or import cheaply from Australia?

I am an ardent fan of Mr B shetty. He has profound knowledge and convincing scientific data that proves that thermal plants are dangerous for human life and ecology. It's a well known fact that coal based thermal plants are closed ,or are on the verge of closure world over. Going by the previous promises,I would like to believe that the Provision of filters for Nandikoor plant is a mere farce!.Politicians and their brethren are champions of hood winking innocent people.

I think the Anti Nandikoor Thermal plant groups have not got enough national and international media attention. They should have created a singur like situation in and around nandikoor. The uttara kannada thermal plant has been shelved because of the national media attention that was given to the issue.

The similar kind of media attention has not been given to Nandikoor issue.I wonder why? My humble suggestion/request to Mr B shetty and other able leaders in the region to come together and rake in national and international media ..like the CNNs,BBC,s National geography etc,and trigger a national/international debate on the Nandikoor thermal plant. This way I am sure we will be able to prevent future eco sensitive projects in and around Coastal Karnataka.

Please correct 220KW as 220KV Actually 220KW doesn't require such a large scale switchgear.

Gas project does not emit SO2 and fly ash, Mr. Johnson. I supported villagers for 22 years-sadly some do not learn the difference between good and bad. Do you know after we dragged them to court the land price is doubled from 2.25 lakhs to 4.56 lakhs? We all will see whether the project is going to be successful and whether people around it will be happy eating fly ash.

Balakrishna Shetty - it is time you admit you've been wrong all along. Why blame Eswarappa or others when permission was granted by successive governments (different political parties)? Your misguided attempt at derailing this project has been exposed many times in many forums. Even now when project is ready to produce output you are clinging on to environmental non-sense when UPC is using latest filters available in the world.

You wanted gas project here for unknown reasons and when you could not get that you supported innocent poor villagers against Nagarjuna plant. Now those villagers are on the road - neither receiving compensation nor support from anti-Nagarjuna protesters. God bless you, Dubai Sir.

UPC (Nagarjuna) is a illegally implemented project, the location is illegally shifted to Yellur village which was specifically @ categorically rejected by the expert committee of the MOEF, even it is not conceived through competitive bidding, there are some serious irregularities in the implementation of this project has come to the light under RTI act

The Karnataka Ministers have a habit of putting the cart before horse. They are too eager to lay foundation stones anywhere and every where. To build the transmission lines over 1000 acres of raiforest would go in the Western Ghats. There is no clearance for that from the Environment Ministry. Mr. Eshwarappa gave NOC to UPCL for changing capacity from 1000mw to 1500mw without knowing the cost.

Why is he and his colleagues so generous to UPCL only he can explain people! When the entire country is setting power plants with competitive bidding and buying power at Rupee 1.10 to 1.60 per unit, we would be paying close to Rs 3.00 per unit from UPCL. Mr. Eshwarappa himself admitted that Tadadi gas based power would cost 3.12 per unit. Then why are we having coal based power plant here in this ecologically sensitive area?

Hue and cry raised by environmentalist has died down along with the elections. Now Nagarjuna alias Udupi Power Corporation is geting set to produce Thermal Power with the tune of 2100 Mega Watts. Thadadi is lucky to get Gas based 4000 Mega Watt Power generation Unit.Total 6100 Mega Watts from Coastal Karnataka. Eshwarappa Sir, Why cant you propose to start one Super Thermal Power Project from your constituancy? So that we coastal people can breath fresh air, eat fresh fish and vegetables, drink fresh water and grow fresh local vegetables and other agricultural produce.
