Mangalore, Sep 22: Justice B K Somashekara, head of the enquiry commission looking into the attacks on churches that took place in the state last year, said on Tuesday September 22 that the commission has prepared an interim report after investigation and it will be submitted to the government soon.

He added that the report will be kept at the enquiry court hall in the city Circuit House on Wednesday September 23.

Speaking to media persons, Justice Somashekara said the interim report will be submitted to the government. “The government will decide the future course of action. On Wednesday, the report will be kept at the Circuit House for the benefit of complainants and advocates with the intention of transparency”.

He also said that the commission will end the enquiry by November 2009 and call a meeting of deputy commissioners of 29 districts of the state to discuss the church attacks and incidents in its aftermath.

“We are doing our duty; let us hope for the best from the government”, said the Justice when asked about the many commission reports kept only as records without being implemented.

He added that the enquiry into complaints and recording of arguments by lawyers on both sides has been done. Justice Somashekara expressed the hope that the commission will be able to submit its final report in December.

Following the attacks on churches last year, the state government had formed an enquiry commission headed by the former state high court justice to probe the attacks. The members of the commission include several legal experts.

Instituting a commission of enquiry is nothing but a tactic of the government to just pacify the victims and buy the time as they know time is a great healer and with the passage of time people will forget and lead a normal life. This commission is doing the work of a lotion on a wound. It will not expose the wound but will hold on to the surface of the wound.

The report is nothing but a carefully manipulated strategy of the government just to water the stormy dust to settle down so that it doesnt make any more hasiness. This commission is one more addition to hundreds of previous similar commissions and the report is also one more addition. Just mere waste of government funds and waste of time of those who disposed to the commission.

I agree with Eulalia. Reports will remain just reports, no action. Only burden to dustbin. Sometimes I doubt about my reading glasses. Am i reading it right? Is it satya meva jayathai or mitya meva jayathai. Here is the last years report. Report blames Bajrang Dal, cops for Mangalore attacks Vicky Nanjappa A fact-finding committee, comprising of human rights activists formed to look into the recent violence in Mangalore, has stated that the attacks were carried out by the Bajrang Dal and the Sri Rama Sene (a local Hindu group). The team said the 'planned attacks' were aimed at causing hurt and resentment among Christians. It was also used as a pretext by the police to let lose a savage assault on the community and its sacred institutions, the report said. A committee comprising 17 activists from Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka and Maharashtra visited Mangalore on October 10 and 11 to investigate the attacks. The report states that on September 14, Bajrang Dal activists attacked the Adoration Centre at Milagres Church in the heart of the city and the CSI Church at Kodical without provocation. The two attacks took place almost simultaneously at about 10.15 am. At Kodical there was nobody in the church. About 30 to 35 persons, who had masks covering their faces, came on motorbikes and ransacked the church with iron pipes, cricket stumps and sticks. They shouted pro Bajrang Dal slogans. By the time members of the church rushed there, the assailants had fled. The report also says the police arrived without any intimation from the victims within five minutes. They cleaned the debris and took it away without performing any inquest. The team also visited Adoration Centre, Milagres, St Sebastian Church, Peramannur, the CSI Church, Kodical, Holy Cross Church, Kulsekhar and St Joseph, The Worker Church, Vamanjoor.

The team also spoke to the IG of Police, Western Range. At each place the team spoke to a number of witnesses and victims. At Milagres, about 15 persons on motorbikes shouting pro-Bajrang Dal slogan entered the Adoration Centre and attacked it with lathis desecrating even a plaster of Paris figure of Christ on the cross. A couple who had come to pray were beaten, the report said. The police who came after a complaint was lodged were more interested in interrogating the nuns than in investigating the assaults. A policemen warned members not to allow the media to take photographs or video. When the Christian community undertook protests in the form of road blockades and dharnas at various places including Mangalore city, the police suddenly became active and imposed prohibitory orders.

At Milagres the police chased and fired tear-gas shells at the protesting Christians. When the latter ran into the compound of the Adoration Centre and threw stones at the police, the police threw back the stones and also glass bottles and caused further damage to the Centre, the report stated. The team con

This report will also gather dust like many such reports in the past. I am just curious to know what reports are we talking about, when proceeding are taking place just one way accusing Catholics / Christians. Is the Judiciary ever talking n discussing about who attacked the worship places? Has anybody been identified at all? Has anybody been booked at all on charges of this offence of attacking worship places? Are we just showing to public that an inquiry took place & a report has been prepared..!! Typical way of Government bodies / systems functioning. Truth will prevail some day & devine power will show what is the fact of the matter is. Let us wait n watch for that time. It is unfortunate to see the way things are going ahead.

There are complaints about the functioning of this commission. The commission was partial it is claimed. It will be good to rest with the interim report and stop wasting valuable resources, money apart, time and positive spirits of people are being mis-used. What is TRUE will sustain and will emerge irrespective of commissions. Let us trust on the divine powers to protect the truth, than these 'employment' oriented commissions. No offence to the government machinery or the judiciary, but we have to see the writing on the wall and accept it.
