Over 3,500 Karnataka Government Doctors Resign

Bangalore, Sep 29 (IANS) Over 3,500 Karnataka government doctors Tuesday submitted their resignation protesting the "meagre" hike in salaries. The treatment of patients was, however, not affected as the doctors have given the government two weeks to either accept their demands or their resignations.

The doctors went ahead with their letters, rejecting the appeal of the state's retiring Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao to wait till Oct 4.

"Since 2005, the government has been giving such assurances. We rejected the chief secretary's appeal at a meeting with him and 3,681 doctors submitted the resignation to the director of health and family welfare department," G.A. Srinivas, a spokesperson for the doctors, told IANS.

Rao, husband of foreign secretary Nirupama Rao who retires as chief secretary Wednesday and has been appointed member of the Central Administrative Tribunal, called the doctors for a meeting as Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and his cabinet colleagues are out of Bangalore.

The entire state cabinet is in Suttur, about 150 km from here, for a three-day brain-storming session addressed by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley.

Srinivas said there was a possibility of a meeting with Yeddyurappa on Sunday.

"We told the chief secretary that instead of asking us to wait till Oct 4, let the government take decision by then," Srinivas told IANS.

The doctors are demanding that their pay at entry level be nearly doubled, from the present Rs.18,500 per month to Rs.35,000 per month.

The government has offered a hike of between Rs.3,000 and Rs.8,000.

According to Srinivas, another 400 doctors would also submit their resignation in a day or two. They were asked to stay back in their hospitals across Karnataka so that treatment of patients was not affected.

Well said John, the Indian govt and mentality of the people has to be changed. It will surely take some time to India to make a difference. All 3,500 doctors will not have same type of mentality. The comments posted by people clearly says that people are just there to blame others, instead of working hard and trying to take a good decision and help others in their own community or in a particular area. I hope and pray that we would see a developed Indian, whilst there are people who contribute so negatively to the socity and only there to blame doctors.

I agree with everyone that Rs18500/- is too less for a MBBS doctor. The question here is why any doctor should accept such a low salaried job government job. Every doctor should know what his capabilities are before taking up this government job. Do they know the other benefits and after retirement what others don’t get. I also agree, when the MP’s and MLA’s get a huge rise, why not doctors, but this is not the way holding innocent poor at ransom. Very sad but true there are some satanic Doctors demanding money to release the dead body of accident cases.

18,500 rupees is too less for MBBS qualified doctor when even fresh call center guys are getting more than 10 thousand rupees with hardly any qualification. But 35 thousand is a bit too much .25 thousand seems reasonable salary although I know that's a pittance in Bangalore.I used to live there before. After rent, groceries and bills nothing is left even with 25 thousand salary.

The future of any society/country depends on the primary education/health. If the govt is not capable of providing enough facility or medical equipments to cure a patient, then what the poor doctor can do with his Rs.18,000. salary. What sort equipment he can buy to identify the disease? I hope govt will take a serious action towards changing the infrastructure of the govt hospitals rather than just ignoring such an important issue which lies the future of socity/children. People just comment without looking at the infrastructure of hospitals.

Hi Shahnawaz, Your comments clearly says that each and every profession and every professional person looks for a profit to give better life to their future children. As per your comments Doctors should have moral responsibility towards society. Its everyone's duty to work for socity and people around them. I do not understand why people have such a bad opinion about doctors. Now a days its not easy to deal with a normal person.

Just imagine a doctor attends a patient for his/her whole life meeting patients and try to cure a person who is ill. If you see in western countries, if a person is suffering with some disease they will accept that one day that disease may take his/her life away. Its a normal human thought that doctor's are there to check the patients condition and try to cure.

Indian people should understand that doctors are Gods. In India people will just come to a conclusion that doctor's do not deserve the salary that they are getting. I am requesting people of karnataka, please do not only depend on doctor's to make a difference in the socity, its a duty of every human being to lives in this world to make a difference to others life.

I see a lot of comments saying doctors are for service not for money etc.no doubt that was an era when doctors would have that kind of respect and they would get some stuff at least in kind for services rendered.today are any of you willing to give anything at a subsidised rate to a doctor or a teacher because they are in service of humanity.the comments in this news item itself show how much is respect is left for doctors.

Yes no doubt if discontent is there they can leave.the issue is only disparity between doctors of same experience in medical education dept getting double pay for last three years.jus because some doctors are corrupt all cannot be branded so.no doubt health statistics are improving a lot in our country and several govt schemes like pulse polio, naco etc aply a major role in it.if that is the case the entire government itself should shut down because it is rotten from top secretary level till the peon level.

Maria/Bangalore, Whilst I partially agree with you that Rs. 18,500/- is not enough. But I have seen in my place all govt hospital doctors are having private practices and making huge money. You have lot of praises for western countries. Who is holding you and your husband from taking up employment in europe? Just resign and go.

Why you people are holding innocent people as hostages to fulfil your demand. A professional like doctors must have decency and moral responsibility towards the society. Its like lawyers who take oath to uphold justice and do exactly the opposite when it comes to money. A lawyer is given trainig how to master lie and pass the lie detection tests. Now all medicos have proved they are not different that lawyers for sake of money.

Everyone has the right to resign and quit if they wish to do so. All doctors joining together like this leaving their duties behind just for a show like this is not acceptable..!!!! This could have been done by registered post also..!!??? No doubt the salaries paid to the doctors will not justfy their qualification. They also have a life to lead and need money like others..!!?? As for the tax payers money spent to the education, it is not only for the doctors, most of the Indians who studied in Goverment colleges have educated with the tax payers money..!!??? Afterall where shall the taxpayers money shall go...to the politicians swiss account..!!!?????

I am a Doctor's wife, we are planning to have family. We can not have family with just Rs.18,500 in the Metro City like Bangalore. Since Doctor's do not have respect in India/Karnataka it causes there is no value for human life in India. In this matter Indian Govt has to learn a lot from Western Countries that doctor's get lot of respect for their profession. I wish good luck for all those doctor's who have resigned and hope their wish will be fulfilled in the future.

With due respect to medicos and their service, I consider that the doctors are crossing their line. Salary is a point of concern in any field and no one ever will be completely satisfied with the salary however hefty it may be. But the stand taken by doctors is highly questionable. At the first instance I am still confused as being a doctor is a profession or service. Those who take it as profession and not as service would surely have umpteen complaints. But those who take it as service perhaps will really value it.

These people can either give life or take life and it depends solely on them as what they choose to be. Compared to many others, docs are still better paid. When we have people around us who still struggle to get a decent salary, forget about good, these medicos perhaps have to think a lot. Suppose if the government does not accept their demands in two weeks, are they going to hamper services? Are they going to make the patients scapegoat?

Do they want a hike in salary at the cost of life of patients? What is the guarantee that if the salary is hiked, they there will be improvement in their behaviour towards patients and their service, which have left a lot of questions over the years? They are blackmailing for better salaries, but would they guarantee that they will be better and serve the patients with love and utmost care? I don't think so because over the years they have always be a shame when it came to good service and care.

Hi Rolphy, Saleem and M.A, I do respect your comments. But did you all ever been to any operation theatre, did you ever faced a patient. Its a very emotional thing and heart breaking to treat anyone in the hospital even though they are trained as doctors. They have to be paid not only the high salary, but to be worshipped as God. They go through the pain everyday with each and every patients pain. Common they also study hard and deserve to be paid well. If you appoint a fresh doctor, you all will know the quality of treatment you get in future. Wake up India, and respect doctors and pay well as per their qualifications. Doctors play a very important role in the man's life and death.

It would have been also advisible to mention the present salary of the doctors. Could the govt. doctors go around and find from the patients as to how much they are earning every day? Probably some of them might be earning just Rs. 75/- to Rs.125/- per day! What does the medical ethics speak when one goes into medical science/practices?

Our Govt. doctors are supposed to be the servants of the sick people and not govt. servants to go on mass strike and submit resignation in this manner. Let these vicious people be relieved from this sacred responsibility even without paying their earlier dues. Let the general public support the govt. in this regard.

Being in medical profession it is not right to resign all at once. Doctors are angels of God and considered as life savers not life takers. Who is morally responsible for the death of any poor individual? Who will take care of that family, if the dead man is the only bread winner? It may be difficult for a doctor to survive with Rs 35,000/-, but it is impossible for a poor man to pay his medical bill of a private hospital. Doctors must remember that government is also spending millions of rupees for their education from tax payer’s money and they have an obligation towards poor people. The money problem can be solved amicably, but life and death cannot be solved that way. I urge all the doctors to differentiate between a terrorist and doctor. You cannot kill Paul for Peter’s fault. We all know how lethargic our bureaucrats and how inefficient our politicians are. None of us are supporting such lethargic officials. What we can do is only pray for an amicable solution. We are with you dear doctors if you consider the life of poor.
