Bangalore, Oct 5 (The Hindu): Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said that the loss to public and private properties following the rain in the State will cross Rs. 20,000 crore. He has called upon the Centre to immediately despatch a study team to assess the damage.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Yeddyurappa said the Centre should treat the unprecedented rain and floods in the State as a “national calamity” and immediately release Rs. 10,000 crore for relief measures.

With the rain affecting an estimated 17.8 million people in 15 districts across the State, Yeddyurappa said: “relief and reconstruction operations need to be taken up on a big scale considering the magnitude of the tragedy.”

The Chief Minister said the State Government had released Rs. 205 crore for immediate relief measures such as opening relief centres to provide shelter and succour to the affected people.

Centre thanked

Yeddyurappa expressed his “sincere thanks” to the Union Government for readily responding to the State’s request for assistance in the rescue and relief operations.

Personnel and equipment from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as well as the Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters, which were made available expeditiously, had proved useful in evacuating the marooned families from the flooded areas.

“The Centre has provided eight helicopters and 38 boats for relief work,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s office.

Meanwhile, convener of ABIDe Rajeev Chandrashekar, MP, has announced a contribution of Rs. 25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Besides, Chandrashekar has appealed to the people and corporates of Bangalore and other parts of the country to donate generously to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Dear Shahnawaz I am sorry the way you presented your comment on this natural calamity? Atleast have courtesy to be sympathetic towards people who suffered irreparable loss due to this. Be a human! I am following your comment on various subjects and some time I appreciate about your understanding. However, this you totally off the record and condem your comments. This column is to discuss the real issues not to show one up manship. You may have some grudge with Mr. Nagesh Mama but it is not the issue where you comment absurdly. Trust best counsel will prevail.

People were cribbing that there is no water and rain. Now there is water but still cribbing. People want relief money even if there is no rain and even when it rains. This is how the tax payers money is used. Its human nature that we are never satisfied.

I can recall sometime back, our honourable chief minister had conducted prayers for rain and later that God heard his prayers and provided with sufficient rains. (Is he so ignorant that he could not realise that it was the rainy season and it did rain) I don't know why he cannot pray to the same God to save his dear state from the havocs of the same rain.

After reading this article and comments ... i am simply confused. even time like this we are busy to show our hate towards others religion, god, and party!   We are happy to play blame game!.. instead of helping if we can! why some people expect the government to do all the work? its unfair to blame chief minister or any party member. Good humans should give moral support to leaders when time like this.. then only we can expect them to do some good work.

Rains have created havoc in the lives of people of Northern karnatak & AP. We need to be symphathetic to their sorry and miserable plight as many of them have been caught unawares. I am a devotee of Shri Raghavendra Swamiji and had been to Mantralaym recently along with my family. For my shock, i came to know that both the places where i stayed have been fully submegred under the water.

Karnatka Government has done an excelent job of air lifitng beleagured Swamji to safety. The sight of most of the marooned villages and devastated people makes me sad. Its the time all should come together to lend helping hands to needy and poor people. Its very appaling to read some haughty political comments here by people who live in desert and advice others and make fun of Government, which is fully involved providing shelter, food and in rescue efforts.

We have Shri. Yediyurappaji to guide Karnataka to glory. People like jason / akhil and tauro needs to be more sensible while commenting as this is a natural calamity not a man made one. You may be the next target of Natures fury soon.

Jai Ho Nagesh Maam, If you need more money for Karnataka from the UPA regime, please vote for congress next time. Is the time is not ripe for karnataka MLAs to become richer by pocket relief funds. Center knows how greedy BJP MLAs are and is not releasing funds. Yeddi is a poojary and let him pray to God to bring in more relief from the center. May be UPA may listen to Yeddis request through God's intervention...... Jai Ho.... Nagesh Maam. Bare asaki?

If CM Yediyurappa wouldnt have visited the place and examined it, there would have been lot of issues and gossips on this matters. and someone commented on yoga, atleast BJPs leaders are capable enough to do Yogas where as some of our earlier leaders like Dharam singh, mallikarjuna Karge etc etc.. cant even walk properly.

Another comment was that relief would bring more money into yeddis pocket, my dude Shankar, am dont know whether your aware that BJP came into rule just 2 years ago. Congress was ruling out the sates from many years, then just imagine how much would their pockets have been filled.

If Mr.CM could visit temples asking for timely monsoon... he should have also taken a second trip asking the deities to recede the water levels and minimize the loss due to floods.... Now that he is asking for financial assistance from the centre has he forgotten his gods???

Now relief work will bring more money into the pockets of yeddi regime. in the name of distribution, his team is ready to grab the situation. shame on you , yeddi and his team should not travel to all places, instead he should send military people in the same chartered helicopter to rescue people and distribute food. if you go round and round, people will get not anything !!!
