Mangalore: Rising Price of Onion Hits Consumers Hard

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Dec 1: The rate of onion rose to Rs 40 per kilogram on Monday November 30 in the local market, the highest in the recent years, thus forcing the consumers to think of forgoing this otherwise must-have vegetable in the kitchen.

The price of onion, which used to hover between Rs 9 and 14 earlier, has been steadily rising of late. On Sunday, the price was between Rs 30 and 34 in the Central Market here, but on Monday, it rose by a whopping six rupees per kg. Market sources attribute the price rise to the onion crops of Maharasthra and North Karnataka getting affected by the recent floods. They point out, that since that region experienced floods, onion prices have become volatile, and as supply position also has been on a roller coaster ride.

However, the new stock of onion which was received in Udupi market was traded between Rs 25 and 28 per kilogram. If replenishment does not come through trucks today, the onion prices may hit new records, bringing tears down the eyes of the consumers, literally.
