Mangaluru, Apr 18: Beedi industry would be resuming work in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district from April 20, district in charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said.

The minister, in a meeting of beedi company owners and beedi workers leaders held in the deputy commissioner’s office on Saturday said, “There are 1.90 lac beedi workers in Dakshina Kannada district and 21 thousand in Udupi district. Beedi industry was completely stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. The government has noticed that it has posed problems for the livelihood of the poor people. Therefore, beedi industry owners have consented to provide up to 50% work,” he said.

“The industry owners were requested to pay the annual bonus to the workers a little early this year. The owners have said that they will take a decision on the matter soon. The progress of the industry will be reviewed in a meeting that will be held after fifteen days,” he said.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Vedavyas Kamath, DC Sindhu B Rupesh, additional DC Roopa, urban development project director Gayatri Nayak were also present among others.

Food to migrant workers in city also

"Food will be distributed through the respective local groups to migrant workers, destitute, and the beggars affected by lock down. No one should remain hungry due to lock down," the minister said.

He asked the health department to submit a report within ten days after the house visits by the ASHA workers and obtaining details of health of all the family members.

Rs 2,000 deposited to the bank accounts of construction workers

“The state government has announced relief assistance of Rs 2,000 to the construction workers. The amount is already deposited to the accounts of 6,122 workers. It will be deposited to the accounts of other workers soon,” he said.

Those who have applied for ration cards directed to obtain ration

“Ration is being distributed to those who have applied for new BPL or APL ration cards. Applicants can go to their nearest ration shops and obtain ration. BPL card holders will be given 10 kg rice free of cost while APL card holders have to pay a minimal of Rs 15 per kg. New applicants can produce a copy of their application and Aadhar card in the ration shop and obtain ration”, the joint director of the department of food stated in a notification.
