Belagavi, May 12: A farmer from Sultanpur village in Raibag taluk in the district died after falling into the borewell he had dug in his field. The deceased has been identified as Lakkappa Sangappa Doddamani (38).

Lakkappa had raised a loan to protect his crops and had dug borewell two days back. He, however, failed to get water. This turned out to be an utter disappointment for the farmer who was hoping to provide water to the crops. He fell into the borewell on Monday morning. As there was no casing, he was stuck 15 feet below. The fact that he had fallen into the borewell was noticed by others after a long delay. By the time help could be arranged, the farmer had died of suffocation.

Police personnel from Haroogeri and Raibag came with rescue teams. The fire brigade from Athani also came on the scene. State Disaster Response Force from Belagavi dug a parallel borewell and brought the body of the farmer out. It is suspected that Lakkappa decided to commit suicide because of mounting debt and a failed borewell.

The farmer is survived by a wife and two children aged 11 and 9. The deputy commissioner and superintendent of police visited the family and promised compensation from the government.
