Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, May 16: Udupi district received heavy rain with wind, lightning and thunder on Friday May 15 evening.

Because of strong wind, the intensity of rain was multiplied. Because of wind, clouds got dispersed and clear weather returned in about an hour's time. Places like Manlpal, Parkala and Hiriadka plunged in darkness as power supply was disrupted. The coast is expected to get rainfall during the next four days too.

In a strange phenomenon witnessed over the surface of sea behind St Mary's Island off Malpe, whirlwind was witnessed. The huge whirlwind that was churning fast sucked in large amount of sea water towards the cloud. Those residing near the seashore were taken aback by this phenomenon. In a few minutes, however, the whirlwind disappeared. The fishermen said that if the whirlwind column had entered populous area of Malpe, there would have been large scale devastation.

Many other areas in the coast too experienced rain. Mangaluru and nearby areas got only a little drizzle.
