Mangalore, Mar 27:
The long-awaited Volvo bus service on the Mangalore-Manipal route started by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) was simultaneously inaugurated on the morning of Saturday March 27 in the city and Manipal. With this, a new chapter in the era of public transportation system in the coastal districts has been unveiled, duly warding off the speculations and doubts that had arisen about the practicability of starting such a service.

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, flagged off the Volvo bus service from the service bus stand near the State Bank region in the city. The Volvo service that offers air-conditioned and comfortable ambience, and the convenience of low footboard facility and equipped with modern technology, will attract the passengers bound for Udupi and Manipal, who want speed and comfort. The bus will have stops in Suratkal, Mulky, Padubidri and Udupi. State home minister, Dr V S Acharya, inaugurated the Volvo bus service from near the service bus stand in Manipal. A total of six Volvo buses will run between these two destinations.

“This is a special gift for the people of this coastal district,” said Krishna J Palemar, after flagging of the Volvo bus service. He added that Volvo bus service to Kasaragod will also be inaugurated soon, after getting permit clearance from the state authority. The KSRTC plans to run six Volvo buses on the Kasaragod route, he added.

A total of six Volvo buses that will ply between the city and Manipal, will be available between 7.30 am and 6.30 pm, on an hourly basis. The travelling fare will be Rs 60 to Manipal from Mangalore, Rs 55 to Udupi, Rs 40 to Padubidri, Rs 35 to Mulky and Rs 20 to Surathkal. On the return trip, the Volvo buses will cost Rs 10 between Manipal and Udupi, Rs 30 to  Padubidri, Rs 40 to Mulky and Rs 50 to Suratkal.

City mayor, Rajani Dugganna, deputy commissioner of the district, V Ponnuraj, superintendent of police, Dr A S Rao, KSRTC divisional controller. Karumbaiah etc., were present at the inaugural. Local MLA, Raghupati Bhat and MP, D V Sadanand Gowda, were present at the time the Volvo bus was flagged off from Manipal.

    I Second Jack...
People talk irrelevant things here.. about BLR-MLR train.. Electricity etc.
for their kind information Railway department is Central Govt. Body and Karnataka Govt. has no say in that.Electricity problem everyone in Karnataka are facing, it is an example for mismanagement by that department (though Govt. has some say in that).
Here too.. though the present Govt. has taken some daring step.. it is KSRTC to be credited for this.
To Mc Queen..whichever religion.. whichever country it is.. on some occasion.. Vehicles will be decorated. I have seen Emiratis decorating their vehicles in UAE during national day.. so why are so furious about the decoration..?

This is service is for people who has got lot of money and looking for comfort. Fine, there is no arguments. What is strange and astonishing is the fun-fare followed by the state administration in every such kind of opening ceremonies. May be the cost of buses introduced seems higher than the buses itself, as people come flying from skies to cut ribbons. Govt should break off the service IN CASE it wont get enough revenues to sustain to avoid tax payers money going waste.

If Mangalore to Kasargod Volvo bus service is introduced there will be less congestion on the NH-17 as the commuters on cars will use Volvo buses and save their money as well as it will promote Green India.

Everything looks rosy from outside, with all prominent politicians beaming wide smile & showing their dentures. Finally a good step by KSRTC-but the seats are not befitting Volvo name or the extra money paid by the passengers, sans AC it is ordinary bus adorned by hand loops for standing passengers-which should'nt invite anybody to travel standing by paying more.

    Mr. Raj Ramachandra...
Your question about why there is no electricity since 62 years of independence, you better ask the people who ruled for all of those 60 years our state and Nation. This Government has been voted to power only for about less than 2 years and you are already seeing the difference. Even tough KSRTC is a Govt body, we all know it runs on the directives of the CM and Transport Minister.

All these years Congress could not put this service into force as one of their own is the President of Bus Owners association of DK.... So for a start appreciate the changes this Govt is bringing in, If you make a survey I am sure you will find some Bus Owners are backing the BJP, but even then the Govt has not fallen heed to any pressure internally or externally.

    Mr Mcqueen....
You have nothing better to do than finding fault in decorating the bus on its inaugral run, you may not be aware of the Indian traditions, all vehicles are filled with decor for atleast on their first run and once a year on Ayudha Pooja... what is wrong in that???? Out here in Australia the State Owned Buses are allowed to have decor on them every year during X'mas for the whole month of December... whichever driver is interested can decor his bus and you should come here to see the lovely colours on the bus... Maybe this year I will send some pic's to Daiji to show to the world.
BTW if you did have a house warming did you not lighten up your house???? I am sure you have not done anything like it .

Now I have a serious question!! Who owns KSRTC? Does the State BJP Unit owns it or the common Tax Payer? Who is utilising the services? Ofcourse, money is always made by the people connected to ruling machinery!!! Corruption is at its peak under the current state leadership according to the common man!!!

Though it is a welcome move, we need to wait and watch whether it really serves the people before being euphoric.

I want to quote my experience of travelling in KSRTC from Kasargod to Mangalore. I had boarded KSRTC bus starting from Kasargod at 4.15 p.m. There was one more private bus travelling in the same direction just in front of this bus. The KSRTC chased the private bus till it reached "Kumbla" to give them an impression that KSRTC will overtake and grab all the passengers. When both buses reached Kumbla, the private bus cleaner handed over some amount to the conductor of the KSRTC bus and thereafter the KSRTC started moving at a snail's pace with hardly any passengers whereas the private bus had passengers standing. Also private bus should have reached 10 to 15 minutes prior to KSRTC. I was wondering why should I travel again in KSRTC by paying an higher amount and reach late.

I am sure private buses in Udupi-Manipal also will resort to the similar practices and KSRTC staff who do not have any loyalty towards the organisation will fall easy prey to this tactics.

Although the Volvo service is a welcome step, KSRTC should run ordinary buses too on this route for the benefit of comman man. In the long run we would love to have KSRTC services on all routes including city services. Its time to break the monopoly of the private operators who have played heavoc on our roads.

while it is indeed a happy occasion that the buses have been FINALLY inaugurated, its sad to see the prominence people try to occupy.

a couple of pictures of ONLY the buses, would've looked neat (as in a photo session).
i'm sorry to say this, but, over here, i see more people and the "prominent" politicians who try to occupy center stage (as usual). dont know if it is a mistake on the part of the journalists/ photographers or the people/ politicians.

The poor bus already looks mutilated with all the roses and flowers (and what not) stuck to it. Please dont get me wrong, but would we do the same thing to OUR OWN newly purchased vehicle? may be a small garland in front would do. but over here the whole bus has been smeared!!

While it is indeed good to read on Daijiworld, that the bus has been inaugurated, we need to do some introspection as to how long will we be able to maintain this neatness, cleanliness. Hopefully these buses will be spared of stone pelting during 'bundh' calls given (most of the times) for the flimsiest of reasons - such as blackening the face of the chief of some stupid vigilante right/left wing groups.

If BJp works like this you can see the changes in Karnataka towards positive directions.
