Bangalore, May 6: As many as 236 villages in 13 districts of Karnataka have been facing severe drinking water problem, according to Karnataka’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar.

The government is trying its best to solve the drinking water problems of the affected villages by pressing into service  687 tankers on a daily basis, he said.

Addressing a news conference, the minister said villages of Bangalore Rural, Kolar, Chickballapur, Bijapur, Koppal, Belgaum, Raichur, Dakshina Kannada, Gulbarga, Mysore, Mandya, Uttara Kannada and Bangalore Urban districts have been facing drinking water problem.

He pointed out that many villages of Chincholi taluk in Gulbarga (81), Bijapur (56), Kumta taluk in Uttara Kannada (40) and Dakshina Kannada (34) districts have been facing severe water problems.

Tankers have been supplying water daily to village residents. A sum of Rs 19 crore had been released to Chief Executive Officers of different zilla panchayats. Rs 1 crore each had been released to Kolar and Chickballapur districts to tackle drinking water crisis, Shettar said.

The department has prepared an action plan focusing on recharge of ground water through construction of check dams, ponds, and rainwater harvesting.

The department has requested the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to conduct a survey on water sources in several parts of the State. The survey would help the department in
preparation of plans as well as implementation of drinking water schemes, he said.

The minister said the State had submitted a proposal seeking Rs 1400 crore in 2010-11 under the Prime Minister Grameen Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) forupgrading village roads to the extent of 4304 kms in the State. In the previous year, the State had utilised Rs. 850 crore under PMGSY.

Pointing out that he had  met Union Rural Development Minister C P Joshi last week at Delhi and requested him to release the funds under PMGSY without any delay.

Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily too had written to the Prime Minister seeking release of funds to the State under PMGSY, Shettar added.

9 river flows in Karnataka..8 of them are moving towards bay of bengal and 1 towards Arabian Sea.Govt. is trying to release fund Central to tackle drinking water crisis.Sanctioning 1 crore to district will not solve the problem..(Since we know how the pwd employees are).Govt. have to make plan towards constructing dams and generating electricity power, which can store water and used not only for drinking as well as agriculture and industrial purpose.Plant water recycling systems in major cities..Get a plan what YSR did in Andhra for solving water crisis..other than blaming political parties...

If we want to change the system,we should be in system.People are anticipating that Govt. will provide and solve the common daily issues.

It will never happen in Karnataka..upper class is thinking of high priority money making things..lower middle class and poor class waiting for sunrise. We need a leader who can change the system not a politician...

These political people know to beg not to give...

    Hats off Karnataka..
    Jai Karnataka

If time was the factor then it should apply for the entire world and it should not restrict only to India.

U stay in USA and u must be aware that they think ahead for next 30-40 years and planned accordingly, why didnt it happened in india????? I dont think it was time factor ...

Why u guys crib about minority , quota and all , if u where deserving person i dont think ur growth would have been deceived by any1 on the basis of ur religion. People who are less deserving think about Quotas... In USA which Quota u r getting , guess it should be NRI Quota.

When u say that u r deceived by the govt of india or the karnataka , i dont think u have a moral right to comment on the issues which is existing in our country or state.

    Jai Hind

Mr Nagesh Nayak, where are you? You never seem to lose an opportunity of praising BJP & Yeddy. What is the Govt doing for these unfortunate people except perhaps occasionally supply water (god alone knows, whether it is fit for human consumption!) in tankers (again, are they clean and safe?). Is this development? People are suffering due to want of water, power, lack of proper roads in the ghat section especially the Shiradi-Charmadi-Sampaje region, inadequate public transport and sudden and sharp increase in milk prices, when BJP guys seem to suggest that prices in Karnataka are lower than in other states and cities. Tell that to the poor, middle class families struggling to make both ends meet. Security, especially of women and girls, is another matter of serious concern. Jai Ho BJP.
