Mangalore, Aug 18 (TOI): Asphyxiation caused the deaths of most of the passengers aboard Air IndiaBoeing 737-800 and not burns (due to fire), said Dhananjaya Shanbhog, chief fire officer, Airports Authority of India (AAI), here on Tuesday.

Deposing before the Court of Inquiry which is conducting a three-day public hearing into the May 22 crash, which killed 158 passengers on board IX 812, Shanbhog said most of the bodies he found on the ill-fated aircraft were suggestive that asphyxiation was the main reason. "In case of fire/burns, there would have been attempts to get away to safety. Smoke-caused asphyxiation may have lowered their (victims') response to react quickly to the situation,'' he said.

The Court of Inquiry is headed by retired Air Marshal B N Gokhale. The fire officer said the first fire vehicle had reached the accident spot (Ground Zero) within four minutes, but most of the passengers were dead by that time due to asphyxiation. "We recovered the body of a girl, who was declared dead later. Because we reached in quick time, we could recover many bodies which otherwise would have been reduced to ashes,'' he said, asserting that there was no delay on their part.

Shanbhog also squarely blamed the narrow and potholed approach roads to Ground Zero, which delayed their rescue mission.

Gaurav Porwal and Sukhjinder Singh, maintenance engineers, Air India, said the aircraft was at a higher altitude than what should have been during landing and it had missed the normal threshold limit (where aircraft should have landed). Singh said though the plane was at a high altitude, in the last 50-60 ft, the pilot had managed to float the plane softly and landed gently on the tarmac as against his apprehension that the pilot would do a hard landing and damage the aircraft. Both of them said there was poor visibility on the runway due to a slight drizzle.

Twenty witnesses, ranging from flight dispatchers, maintenance engineers, aircraft mechanics, station managers, met officer and fire personnel were examined by the court on Tuesday. The assessors were S S Nat, Gurcharan Bhatura, Group Capt Deepak Gaur, Babu Peter and Capt Ron Nagar. The inquiry on Wednesday will examine/hear eyewitness, passengers and doctors.

Comments given on the day of Aug/18 was after contacting most victims family's and are correct facts occured on that day.
To save our loved & respected vistims family from any missguider, my Aug/18 comments was a appeal with respective Indian citizen and a specially with Mangalorean for a help. After losing my beloved wife and everloving 9years son ZEESHAN i am alone in this world with bare hand.Even after the tragic incidents and uncurable pain I stepped out from my home and personnally visited most of the vicitms family and shared with their difficulty. Meantime some lawyers group from outside Karnataka landed at mangalore and started to contact all innocent victims family by saying NGO.After my self approach N discussion understood that all are reached mangalore with a commercial mind for their self benefit. For that We can say GHARAM THAWA PE MUFT MEI ROTI SEKHNA.Hence to save all the innocent victims family from these Thugs and for the justice finally i desided to form a association by the grace of ALMIGHTY it was succeded.Invited all bereaved family members reponded and attended the meeting call of my sponsorship.

Now informing all the victims relatives, not to panic or hurry about the final compensation. Since error was fully part of carrier.Final compensation and settlements will be as per our demand and not per AIR INDIA offer.

Please stand together with association and fight for the justice.Sure judgements will be finalised with in year.

I think Air India’s appointed legal firm is doing best possible job to get maximum possible compensation as per the insurance cover available for AI as soon as possible. Looking at the past various disasters handled by various organizations this Air India’s appointed legal firm looks promising so far. Most people are not aware of Montreal convention act, best person to find out is the committee it self. I don’t think the committee has any intension pay less to victims. Best suggestion is keep talking to the Air India’s appointed legal firm personals. One should remember its insurance companies paying the money or not AI. AI appointed legal firm to make sure that insurance company pays proper remuneration as per the policy. I don’t see any reason that legal firm need to wait for the outcome of reason for air crash. Any reason let me know? As requested by AR for guidance from Indian citizen please readers write on this panel.

I am surprised to read in the very opening paragraph that the Commission of Enquiry is hearing of "Cause of Death" from a Fire Officer? Is he qualified to pronounce "cause of death" or is he merely expressing a personal opinion. To my mind the only person who could give the "cause of death" explanation to the Commission should be the Medical Officer who conducted the post-mortem at the hospital to which the unfortunate victims bodies were taken.

After observing the Aug/17 activities, it is quite surprise and strange. One side at MANGALORE inquiry commisson continuing their
investigation and the other side at OCEAN PEARL HOTEL AIR INDIA and its appointed legal firms started settlement to innocent victims family with a clear intention to benefit AIR INDIA without abiding the law by valuating the vicitms as below.
1.Person one who is drawing about AED 7000/- was compensated negotiatable amount upto INR 90lakhs
2.Person one who is drawing below AED 7000/- is elgible to collect INR 25 to 50laks as final compensation.
And for the house wife(ARDHANGHINI),Air Indias appointed legal firm led by Mr.Nanvathi offering a special compensation of INR 30lakhs and for the inocent children INR 20lakhs.This is another punch on inocent vicitims dependent.

Prior to inquiry commsion report, forensic report of pilot and BLACK box decoding why our respective national carrier AIR INDIA started providing compensation without any public announcement.Which is a sign of in hiding their mistakes.

DAIJIWORLD and respective Indian citizens please check and guide the inocent victims family.
Since it is fact that truth is brought to the light by you expecting your early action in the respective matter.
