Udupi, Jun 28: Social worker, Vishu Shetty, rescued a woman who was found lying on the main road in the city and screaming because of the helplessness due to her ill health, and also her nine-year-old daughter who was found feeding her mother by seeking alms from the general public. Thanks to Shetty's humanitarian initiative, the woman was admitted into the district government hospital and the daughter, into the home for girls.

At around 11 am on Sunday June 27, Shetty saw that the girl who had earlier been sheltered in the Bal Mandir was begging and asked her the reason. The girl told him that her mother had fallen very sick and that she was compelled to go begging to feed her. Shetty approached the girl's mother who was found to be screaming out of pain resulting from sickness. She explained that her husband is no more and she has no family members to fall back on. She stated that due to her failing health, she had become helpless and requested him to provide shelter to her and her daughter. Vishu Shetty then admitted her to the district hospital. He admitted the girl again to the Bal Mandir. The timely initiative of Vishu averted a catastrophe in the making. The negligence of the department concerned is apparent in the case. Ramdas Palan Udyavar was associated with the rescue initiative.

It is not known how the girl, who had been sheltered in the Bal Mandir, reached the streets. Shetty too is worried that the girl, who was under the care of the government department, was allowed to go onto the streets again. This is the third case witnessed by Shetty in which girls who had been entrusted to the department's care were found begging in the streets.
