Kasargod, Oct 13: A team led by Hosadurg circle inspector of police, K Ashraf, arrested a person named L K Abdul Nasser (35), a native of Balla Kadappura, and residing in a rented house in Edachchakai in Trikaripura, on Tuesday October 12. With his arrest, the policemen claim they have busted a gang of thieves involved with relieving railway passengers of their valuables.

The policemen recovered 33 sovereigns of gold ornaments from Nasser’s possession. Reportedly, the accused has confessed to have stolen these ornaments from railway passengers on Tuesday morning.

The gang, of which Nasser is a member, reportedly travels in trains moving towards Mangalore, and identifies passengers wearing valuables. At every station, the gang members alight, and they normally target people sitting near the compartment doors.  As the train is about to depart from a station, they jump in, snatch away the valuables and escape. “Very few passengers register complaints, feeling that it is impossible to find out the culprits involved. With this arrest, we have solved five cases including two that occurred at Vadagara station,” Ashraf claimed.

The policemen said that Nasser had been caught by the locals a year ago, while snatching away a gold chain from a teacher, who was walking by after getting down from train. He got involved with his old trade after getting out on bail, and had pawned gold ornaments in cooperative banks a number of times, and sold the ornaments to a jewller from Nileshwar, they added.
