Bengaluru, Mar 26: It has been reported that when schools were not being run on account of covid19 pandemic in the years 2020 and 2021, some districts in Karnataka recorded an abrupt increase in the number of child marriages.
Providing information in response to query raised by the deputy leader of the opposition in the council, minister for women and child welfare department, Halappa Achar, said that 296 child marriage cases were reported in the state in 2020-21. This figure stood at 140 the previous year whereas only 119 cases were recorded in 2018-19. The child marriage cases are going up with each passing year.
The minister also revealed that as per the National Crime Records Bureau, Karnataka is at the top of the list of states that have reported child marriage cases as it reported 184 cases in 2020. The minister attributed this phenomenon to poverty, illiteracy, superstitions, lack of information about child marriage laws, negligence towards educating the girls, elder family members sticking to established traditions etc.
However, executive director of Child Rights Trust, Vasudeva Sharma N V, said that the actual number of child marriages would have been, much more. He said that the correct figure of the child marriage can be obtained if the age of the pregnant women are properly recorded in the Anganwadi centres as many Anganwadi workers do not record their actual ages. He also suggests keeping a close watch on the girls cutting short their education after high school and PU college levels to put brakes on child marriages.

Sat, Mar 26 2022All BJP ruled states are backwards in education and health. They are only interested in creating disharmony and gaining power and buying MLA's from other parties by paying them crores if they don't win enough seats. Cast system is so bad that they won't allow people from lower casts to drink water from their wells. Things are so bad now since Bomma has come to power.

Sat, Mar 26 2022Whichever state is ruled by BJP....education has gone backward. They (BJP) do not want people tobe educated. And hence such distinction is happening. I blame only BJP for this.

Sat, Mar 26 2022Sad,still in villages far from civilization,in villages good old child marriages take place. No one is taking notice of law ,even knowing it is not allowed, they simply say they want a person at home to work.Naturally they meant girl .Boys have to work out and girls as soon as they think old enough marry.Hardly they take notice of school education .They think why education ,however she has to marry morgen or next day.Such thinking of olden days exists still. When husband beats or kills she has to remain there .No escape.Hope some social Services step into this villages and make some studies and allow girls to go school.School that also is far away in such villages and dangerous on the way.Chances of rape on girls on their way or back is increasing.

Sat, Mar 26 2022All because of 'Nehru' and 'Jinnah'. ;) ;) ;) Ramesh Jerkhiholi should be made minister for women and child welfare. What an irony. A male minister holds position for Women and child welfare. Yeh toh Serena Hotel 5th floor and Daniel Mc adams se bhi zyada zabardast hai.
