Bangalore: Bt Brinjal Has Potential to Adversely Affect Lever, Reproduction?

Bangalore, Jan 27: In a shocking revelation, it is reported that Bt Brinjal, when used as food, has the potential to adversely affect the functioning of liver and ovaries, besides destroying white blood cells, which manage the immune system of the body.

This is reportedly contained in the scientific report prepared by Mahyco, which plans to market seeds of Bt Brinjal in Indian market. However, these adverse observations were purposefully kept under wraps while  submitting a study report required to seek commercial use of Bt Brinjal, submitted to the genetic engineering appraisal committee by Mahyco, it is alleged.

Before exposing human beings to any new seeds, insecticides or species, they are used on guinea pigs to ensure that they are safe for use on humans. During the scientific tests conducted about Bt Brinjal on guinea pigs, Mahyco had found that this genetically modified vegetable was not fit for use by humans, claims scientist from New Zealand, Dr Lou Gallagher.

“Powdered Bt Brinjal was used on guinea pigs for only 90 days. Half of the ovaries of the guinea pigs which consumed this vegetable were damaged and their regeneration capacity was curtailed, as per the report. The quantum of white blood cells in the body also came down by around 9 to 12 percent. These can have disastrous affect on the bodies.  As the quantum of aspartate aminotransferase in the body goes up in the body by 54 to 60 percent, the consumption of Bt Brinjal can harm our livers,” the scientist has observed.

Weren't our scientists lamenting that 'ban on Bt Brinjal is too hurting' ? How can one blindly go for GM products without studying it in all angles ? Whereas, India has abundant space and resources to grow products naturally ! GM Products are fit for Western styled kitchen garden farmers.

If our farmers are supported with proper trading facility for their produce, we will have surplus produce for exports. Generally, middlemen buy the produce from farmers for petty rates and make huge profits. Present cooperative societies are a waste due to mismanagement. Fruit/vegetables are costlier there than the market which itself is a paradox.

No wonder our fertile fields have now become haunting coconut/betel nut plantations with various pests destroying the crop at tender stage. Our scientists must work on such problems than wasting public funds for imported, hazardous GM seeds.
