Mangalore: City Chess Prodigies Triumph at State-level Tournament

Mangalore, Jan 29: Panchami Shenoy and Swati Bhat of Mangalore Chess Academy secured first places in U-13 girls’ category and U-10 girls’ category respectively, in the Karnataka state-level open rapid chess tournament held at Bhadravati recently. It was conducted by MPM Chess Club of Bhadravati.

Panchami scored 5 ½ points in nine rounds and topped the U-13 girls’ category. She had placed second in the U-12 category in ICA Open Federated Chess Tournament by securing 6/11 points in Bangalore, recently.

Swati came first in the U-10 girls’ category in the same tournament. She is the current U-9 state champion. Herman Dain Saldana of Mangalore also secured third place in U-16 age category in the same tournament.

All the three players are from Mangalore Chess Academy and are being coached by I M Shivananda, Aravinda Shastry, and Raghavendra.

Preethi Bhat of Mangalore was recognized as the best woman player of the tournament.
