Mangalore, Feb 10: Kulyadi Madhava Pai (75), renowned cloth merchant from the city, breathed his last at his home near Urwa Marigudi here on Wednesday February 9. Pai had been an avid supporter of Kannada language, literature, and culture, besides being a litterateur himself. He had also functioned as the secretary of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat for a term.

Pai, who was born in Mulky on October 20, 1936, is survived by three sons. He completed his degree education in St Aloysius College here, before starting his own cloth business in 1958. In spite of being busy with his business, he never lost interest in literature. He was a talented writer and orator, and contributed in great measure to Kannada culture and literature for four decades.

Madhava Pai had worked with B M Idinabba and Keekana Ramachandra for enriching Kannada literature. He was a great admirer of DVG’s work, ‘Mankutimmana Kagga’, and took interest in studying the work, making a reference to it, and spreading awareness about the spiritual contents of this work through his speeches and articles.

Pai had also worked as the president of the Vardhamana Chair of Kantavara Kannada Sangha.

District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president, Pradip Kumar Kalkura, Harikrishna Punaroor, Bhuvanabhirama Udupa, Dr M Prabhakar Joshi, Prof Amrit Someshwar, Dr Na Mogasale, Srikar Prabhu, and scores of other dignitaries from various fields have condoled the death of Pai.
