Udupi, Feb 15: The department of commerce of Manipal University organized a day-long national conference on Contemporary issues in Banking at MIT seminar hall, Manipal, here on Tuesday February 15.

Ananthakrishna, chairman of Karnataka Bank was the chief guest of the conference. Devananda Upadhyaya, general manager of Syndicate Bank was the guest of honour. Dr Vinod Bhat, pro-vice chancellor of Manipal University presided over the inaugural ceremony. Sandeep S Shenoy I/C head of department of commerce and Guru Prasad Rao, conference co-ordinator were present on the dais.

Ananthakrishna, one of the main resource persons of this conference, in his inaugural address remembered his old days which he had spent in the campus 40 years ago and the initial days in his banking career.

Financial encloser is the one of main contemporary issues in banking sector. The 40 percent of Indians do not have even a bank account. Proper identification of an individual is the main problem for any banker while opening the new account, added Anantakrishna.

He highlighted the ADHAR project and how it can solve the identification of an individual particularly in banking sector. Tracing the students after passing out to recover the loan has become very difficult these days. Maintaining the financial disciple is one of the main works of any banker, said Anantakrishna.

Managing the human resource is another problem for bankers. To replace the right person at right place is very crucial. IT is main background for the financial transactions in the banking sector today. If IT fails, then everything will come down in transaction because people depend on technology more than oneself.

The internal issue amidst banking sector is competitions between the banks. This provides opportunity for business. There are around 65 thousand branches of different banks in India with 10 lac employees who cover just few thousands villages out of 6 lac villages, emphasized Ananthakrishna.

Devananda Upadhyaya said that banks are by the people and for the people. Almost 162 banks came down in America but in India the banks have arisen. Smart banking is the need of hour, added Devananda.

IT Technology is not a front end helper but only the back end supporter to do banking. Technology is not the business but people are the centre of business. IT will increase the speed, reduce the cost and will help in communicating. In coming days, may be in five to ten years time nearly 80 percent of current bank employees will get retried from their job.

We had taken nearly 40 years to become general manager in banking sector, but if students used their proper efficiency in this regard then they can become general mangers in 15 to 20 years. As there is opportunity in technology, there is equal amount of threats in technology. There are some smart employees, who can misuse this technology and make big frauds. Banking should also reach and benefit the villages of India, added Devananda.

Vinod Bhat, in his presidential address said that banker should be empowered, enlightened and ethical in life. Sandeep S Shenoy welcomed the gathering, Varalaxmi proposed the vote of thanks.  Niveeditha compered the programme.

The other issues for discussion were E- banking and security challenges by Dr C Hebbar, faculty of Manipal University, retail banking and CRM at banking by Dr H S Srivatsa, faculty of TAPMI, Manipal, banking sector reforms and risk management approaches by Ram Mohan, director of Karnataka Bank.

Syndicate Bank, HSBC, Abhyudaya Co-operative Bank, Saraswat Bank, State Bank of India, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank, was the supporters of the national conference.
