Bootleggers Attack Raiding Party Led by Karnataka Minister

Belgaum, Feb 17 (IANS) : A group of bootleggers in this north Karnataka district Thursday rained stones on a raiding party led by Excise Minister M.P. Renukacharya, forcing the police to fire in the air to chase them away.

A policeman was injured in the head in the stoning at Karavi village in Belgaum, about 500 km from Bangalore. The minister was not hurt.

“Our people fired thrice in the air to disperse the over 50 bootleggers in the area,” a Belgaum police spokesperson said.

Renukacharya, accompanied by police, officials of his excise department and a few media personnel, went to the village following information that large scale illegal brewing of liquor was on in the area.

As the party neared the spot where brewing activity was on, they were greeted by stones.
Renukacharya later told reporters that he would not be deterred by such attacks and would continue raids across the state.

“We are losing revenue heavily because of bootlegging. We are determined to put an end,” he said.

The state government expects to earn over Rs.8,000 crore (Rs.80 billion) in revenue from liquor sale in the 2010-11 financial year ending March 31. In 2009-10 financial year, the state had earned Rs.7,001 crore in excise revenue.

This bold stone throwing incident hints that the policemen's palms were being greased, in spite of which the raid was conducted, and this is what gave the courage to the bootlegers to shower stones openly on the police party. This incident is similar to the one that happened in Maharashtra where an officer was burnt to death by a desperate oil pilferer....

I believe that there was a excise minister in the erstwhile Mysore State who made millions out of prohibition. People in his remembrance named country hooch as "BASAPPA'. In many places in karnataka, country liquor is still named as 'BASAPPA'

Will the current minister will be able to rename it as 'RENUKA' is anybodys guess

It is sad the police people are injured. The politicains must understand why these people are going in a wrong track. They need their bred and butter. That means I am not supporting them but it is the minister's and CM duty to either give a job, help them financial, or support them to start a small scale industry. Second option government can do is give them wine shop permit. There is no point arresting and beating them because every one must think what their family menas their wife, daughters and parents will do? It is really sad in all ways.

Here I feel bad for the police folks and not the minister who would have been hiding at the back. He is one of the most corrupt ministers in this BJP. Also he is doing this because his ministry is losing money. If these guys pay him, then he won't bother them.
