Mangalore, Feb 20: The morning chill made no difference to a large number of enthusiasts who turned up to participate in the Vijaya Bank Half-marathon, a sports event organized by the Dakshina Kannada district administration. The event kicked-off on Sunday February 20.

It was more than just a race. It proved to be an effective platform to spread social messages for the welfare of the city with the idea of promoting clean, green, progressive Mangalore.

More than 5,000 people took part in the half-marathon and the mini-marathon, which began from the Nehru Maidan at 6.30 am and culminated at the Mangala Stadium later at 8.30 am.

The half-marathon chart included a distance of 21 km, the mini-marathon was more on the lines of a cross country run for the athletically minded over a distance of six km. The former glamour girls of Indian athletics including P T Usha, as well as Vandana Rao, Reeth Abraham, and Vandana Shanbhog added colour to the event.

The marathon passed through Pandeshwar, Mangaladevi, Jeppu Market, Valencia, Kankanady, Jyoti Circle, Hampankatta, Navabharath Circle, PVS Circle, City Hospital, Nantoor, Kadri Park, Battagudde, Kadri Kambla Junction, Pinto Bakery Junction, Bejai Road, KSRTC, Kuntikan Road, Infosys, Urwa Store and Chilimbi, before concluding at Mangala Stadium.

The mini marathon took the routes of Nehru Maidan, Hampankatta, Tagore Park, Jyoti Circle, Bunts Hostel, Karangalpady, Jail Road, Canara College Road, M G Road, Lady Hill, Press Club, Corporation Bank Library Road, and then reached Mangala Stadium.

The competitors traversed along a pre-determined route and the event winded up at Mangala Stadium wherein dignitaries distributed prizes to the winners in the respective categories.

The traffic diversion facilitated in smooth conduct of the event.

Deputy commissioner Subodh Yadav, Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, IGP
Alok Mohan and district in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar  among others were present during the marathon.

I appreciate the good intention of the organizers. But I feel the organizers were interested more in assembling a large number of people. In the process the very purpose of the marathon was lost. In Nehru Maidan from where the marathon began one could see papers of ckers of the chest numbers given to participants strewn all around ground which at the end resembled like a mini battle field. Ditto with Mangala Stadium where paper cups and plates were thrwon all around the ground as there was no proper arrangement for the same. It is not enough to gather large number unless we are able to drive home the message or the purpose of it.

While the organizers took pains to recruit young students from schools and colleges, one could see the disappointment in the faces of these as most of the prizwes were grabbed only by athletes. I think the organizers could have done well to have small cash prizes to students below 15, which would be an inspiration for them. Or they could have organized a separate marathon only for athletes. May be next time the organizers would avoid such chaos and do something about the lacunae pointed out.

Well thought of event but not well planned out. There was total chaos at the starting point, there was no water arranged at all anywhere till the end point. The participants were not instructed to keep to one side of the road free for vehicles causing inconvenience to many.It would be encouraging if all who had completed the marathon would have been given a certificate of appreciation. We need a GREEN mangalore and not making people go GREEN with anger.

The event was fun and interesting. But the event was conducted clumsily.
It was announced that the online registration was possible by Vijaya Bank. But the submit button would not move.It was utter chaos at the venue.Announcement could not be heard and often the faded in the din.It could have been better if directions were conveyed through proper display instead of confusing annoucement.Water was not offered on the way. Please make it an annual event with proper arrangement.
