Mangalore, May 1: ‘Save Our Beach – 2011’ a beach clean drive organized by DK district administration in support of ‘Clean Green Progressive City’ was inaugurated at Thota Bengre here on Sunday May 1.

Speaking on the occasion, district in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar said that the citizens should be united to fight against the pollution of nature.  “The clean drive is a great initiative and action from the group on this regard will have more impact, than individual effort”, he stressed.

He also added that circular will be passed across the state ordering prohibition of usage of plastic bouquet in any government function.

All the chief guests - B N Pinto, Abdul Nazeer, Nagmohandas stressed on importance of participation of local people in keeping the beach clean everlastingly.

Over 11,000 volunteers including NGOs, clubs, corporate, students, locals made it to the beaches in support of ‘Save Our Beach’. The students from various institutes comprised the largest chunk of volunteers. More than 500 students from Yenepoya institutions, about 500 from M V Shetty College, nearly 500 from Alva's College, 200 from A B Shetty College participated in the drive.

Street play performed by the students of A B Shetty College focused on the steps that could be taken to keep clean the beaches in Mangalore like in foreign countries.

DC Subodh Yadav said that this is a massive drive as 43 km-long coastline of Dakshina Kannada district is undergoing the cleanliness drive simultaneously. "Our next drive is to plant trees across the urban areas that are becoming deforested. In our broader vision of sustainable growth, we aim to plant more than 50,000 sapplings across the city to make it clean and green. This will be organized in the last week of June keeping the monsoons in mind as the plants need sufficient water to grow," he said.

The entire coastal area of Dakshina Kannada was divided into five zones to ensure effective cleaning campaigns. The five zones identified include beach stretch from Talapady to Nethravathi, Bengre to NMPT South, Panambur to Hosabettu, Hosabettu to Sasihithlu, and Chitrapura to Hejmady.

Speaking to ‘Daijiworld’ one of the participants Nagendra,  a manager, Corporation Bank, resident of Bejai said that himself and his other 5 associates who have formed Youth Hostel Association of India , who carry out trecking often have arrived in Thota Bengre beach with their own cleaning equipment.

They concentrated only on collecting chappals and plastic bags as it would save their time to achieve their aim as soon as possible. He also said that the district administration should keep as many dustbins on the beaches rather than keeping a very few bins. Only public awareness is the key to achieve ‘Clean Beaches’, he added.

Answering to a query by a press persons Palemar said that there is no lack of underground water in the district and eco club which was formed in the district is affectively carrying out its function. More number of girl students of various colleges participated in the drive. Local people also were seen in impressive numbers.

Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, AC Prabhulinga Kavalikatte, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president of DK unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishad among others were present during the inaugural session.

In all, 91 trucks of garbage were taken away from the beach to the dumpyard. Arrangements were made for ambulance, food, transport, equipment, JCBs, lorries etc.

Every year many people die because of contaminated water and polluted atmosphere. Day by day the pollution is going on increasing.
This article reminds me of a documentary” Hot As Hell: Most polluted part of Planet Earth” highlights how Jharia in Dhanbad district is one of the most polluted parts of India. It also shows the hazardous conditions under which coal miners work.

    These are inspiring pictures to
watch. Both the young and old who
    are from different religious and
    political background are working
with a united spirit to transform a
dirty place to be clean and
    attractive place to all.

By such events, there will be
more unity among the people of
the city. Also, the new spirit of
    "dignity of labour" is getting
    more popular every day.

I feel very ashamed of myself
that I was delinquent in doing
certain things before I left for
the U.S. The greatest thing I
have learned in the U.S., is the
"dignity of labour", so doing any
kind of work gave me greater
    satisfaction in life. If the
    young generation of India is
driven in that attitude of doing
public service, it can make a
greater "cleaning revolution" in India, in the days ahead.

    As Mr. Sudhir, Mangalore has
indicated, it is time to work
not to talk much and hear too much,
    thus wasting precious time.

@sudhir,M-it shows u too participated in this event & good observations. If our politicians keep off all the speeches & advice to others which they never follow or hollow acts, more can be achieved in less time.
If all our citizens were aware of their responsibilities then these programmes could have been avoided. The staff paid to do their job as well are insufficient & inefficient, that causes all the environment polluted in the end.
The whole Mangalore needs to get covered by these awareness creating noble deeds.

I greatly appreciate the cleanliness drive but have to mention that with every high tide there will be more rubbish piling up as plastic, garbage, etc, etc dumped along the coast will come in with the tide.
I would suggest that the Govt purchases a traction vehicle with skimmer rakes which will ply along a 5 kms stretch twice a day every day collecting the waste and the supporting companies offer the services of a JCB to lift up the collected waste and put it on trucks that will take the waste to dumping grounds.
the volunteers can give some time every week to ensure that this is done correctly & properly with their supervision.
It may take time but if there is control is seeing that garbage is not thrown in rivulets, water bodies, etc then the garbage will decrease.

As a suggestion why not charge every ship coming to the karnataka coast a flat fee per call so that their garbage too can be cleared by the trucks- this way there will be generation of funds too.
i understand some ports in other countries levy such a charge.

My suggestion to DAIJIWORLD, start a donation account so we can support little finance and this money can be utilized for the people who come for such a great event and support by giving them some soft drinks and some snacks. I am sorry because I am very far but incase if I am there on holidays sure I will participate. Good job and keep it up.

It was a good initiative. Was heartening to see people, especially the youth turn out in good numbers and participate in the campaign. Kudos to the organizers!
One important thing to be borne is mind next time is time management and cutting down on the speeches. We had reached the beach at the announced time (7 am), but the delays in arrival of "dignitaries" and also the series of "speeches" resulted in the actual work starting after 8:30. Imagine the time wasted (Thousands of people * 1.5 hours), which could have been spent in a better way! All dignitaries who were present today, if you are reading this, PLEASE REALIZE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO TURNED UP TODAY CAME THERE BECAUSE THEY UNDERSTOOD THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INITIATIVE. SO THERE WAS NO NEED FOR YOU TO AGAIN "EDUCATE/ ENLIGHTEN" US ON THE CAMPAIGN. Next time, walk the talk and prove that ACTIONS SPEAK BETTER THAN WORDS!IF YOU HAVE THE URGE TO INDULGE IN VERBAL DIARRHEA, DO THAT IN YOUR BATHROOMS!!!

Good work. When I'll be in mlore next time I will take part in this drive if organized. However, in some photos I can see the collected waste being dumped at a place again looks to be near the beach??? There should have been few trucks arranged to take the waste at the same time instead of dumping again near the beach.
