Mangaluru, Aug 26: The post graduate department of clinical psychology, St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, as a part of World Youth Day awareness program organized several interactive seminars in colleges in and around Mangaluru from August 17-23 in order to commemorate the occasion of World Youth Day.

Youth is the segment of society that drives forth development. Our world tomorrow depends on the health and condition of the youth today. World Youth Day sheds much needed light on issues faced by the youth that do not get the attention they deserve. With increasing rates of unemployment, climate change, technological advancements, and mental health issues, we risk the future of the world by pushing issues faced by the youth under the rug.

A seminar on ‘Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity’ was conducted in St Mary’s Composite Pre-University College, Mangaluru by Amal Ahamed and Jaimy Johnson. It aimed to inform the youth regarding the differences between gender identity and sexual orientation and to create an environment that respects and celebrates differences in gender identities and sexual orientation and expression to live, study and work in a diverse gender society.

Presenters Achsah Ann Shaji and Rosita Sequeira held a seminar on ‘Empowering Youths: Challenges and Strategies’ in St Aloysius PU College, Mangaluru. The seminar addressed the various challenges faced by today's youth and provided strategies to cope and overcome them. The interactive session engaged 1st year PU students in discussions and activities related to pertinent issues.

A talk on ‘Managing Emotions and Anger Management’ was held by Ancy Anthony and Anjana S Nair in Government PU College, Bokkapatna. The seminar focused on bringing the youth’s attention towards the importance of anger management and supplemented them with ways to recognize the signs of anger in themselves and how they could manage it.

Other seminars on the topic of Media Literacy and Mental Health in Adolescents were also conducted.

The seminars conducted were interactive in nature and began with an icebreaker to create a warm and welcoming environment.

All the seminars included interactive concept-based activities to cement the ideas presented. The sessions were concluded with feedback from the students to understand the impact of the knowledge imparted.
