Mangalore, May 23: A professor’s exit has made many heads, inside and outside the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK) campus, hang in shame. Prof P Subbanna Bhat of Electronics and Communication Department in NITK, expressing ‘‘disenchantment in present working environment’’, opted for VRS on May 1.
Director Sandeep Sancheti has accepted it and Dr Bhat would be relieved of all responsibilities on August 1. Sources said that it was the senate’s decision on March 17 that prompted Prof Bhat, to quit.
The 11th senate meeting had resolved to close the ‘‘certificate issue’’ absolving Prof H V Sudhakar Nayak, Prof Shivakumar and Bangladeshi student Shakil Mohd Irfanul Haque of all charges.
The ‘‘issue’’ was first brought to light by Prof Bhat on June 28, 2005 senate meeting. Prof Bhat submitted a copy of the ‘bonafide certificate’ used by the Bangladeshi student to extend his visa period by 14 months from June 10, 2005.
Shakil who had enrolled in 1996 had failed to complete the four-year programme in eight years.
The then director Prof H V Sudhakar Nayak neither confirmed nor denied his signature on the certificate but asked a committee to investigate.
