Mangalore, Jan 20: The two-day State-level convention of construction workers, which concluded here on Monday, focussed on plight of building and construction workers. They took out a rally before assembling at the Nehru Maidan here.
Shivkumar, a leader, pointed out that the construction workers were living in huts after constructing palatial buildings for the well-to-do. “The Government should provide decent houses for us,” he said. Arogyadasu, a leader from Maddur in Mandya district, asked: “How are the daily wage earners expected to survive in deplorable conditions?” They were being sandwiched between inflation and low wages, he said and urged the Government to increase their remuneration. He and Imran, also from Maddur, said that the convention had brought to light the changes that were essential for a normal life. But it would take a long time to realise them. “We have to fight for the benefit of our children,” said Arogyadasu. This struggle was a continuous process, said Shivkumar while his friend Mallesh said the fight would be carried until victory was achieved.
More than 5,000 construction workers from 22 district, including electricians and plumbers, took out a rally from Jyothi Circle to Nehru Maidan. R. Singaravelu, president of Construction Workers Federation of India (CWFI), said that the federation and the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) would be observing the March 2 as demands’ day. The demands, including implementation of All India Construction Worker’s Act of 1996 in all the States, amendment of the All India Unorganised Workers Act of 2005, implementation of Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna in all the States, and starting of employment guarantee scheme for urban workers, would be submitted to the Central Government on that day, he said.
On the impact of global meltdown on construction workers, Mr. Singaravelu said that the Government should allocate more funds for public construction and protect these workers from unemployment and partial employment.
State president of CITU V.G.K. Nair spoke.
