Mangalore, Jan 22: A mini school bus carrying children to a school being run by Raj Academy from Pallipady to Ganjimath near Gurpur sped down a deep cliff after veering off the road at around 8.15 am near Karingala Gundikumeru. The driver of the bus Nagesh lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a steep curve, because of rash driving, eyewitnesses said.
The bus then rushed down the hostile terrain, bumping into rocks and mowing down plants and small trees, before coming to a halt with a thud precariously after a coconut tree located near the house of Monappa Poojary, located about 200-feet down the road, and stopped its descent. People in the house who were in the courtyard rushed into the home on hearing the huge sound of the vehicle rushing down the road towards their house. The house suffered some damage due to the accident.
The bus had only six children at that time, Sameeksha and Rishali, both studying in first standard, Dhanush, Harshita and Dhruva M Shetty, UKG and Maneesha, studying in the fourth standard of the school. All the children except Sameeksha suffered injuries. Three children with serious injuries are being treated in a local hospital.
The speed at which the bus approached the road bend and the ups and downs it went through while going down the cliff, made those who witnessed the accident to think that no one would survive the accident. Miraculously, no lives were lost in the incident. The accident brought back memories of the tragic accident that occurred in Ulaibettu some months back in which a few children lost their lives.
