Udupi district creates record in construction of public toilets

Udupi, Mar 3: “As many as 41 community toilets have been constructed out of the package of Rs 123 lac under Swachh Bharath mission. Out of them 38 toilets are ready for use. The remaining three are in the finishing stages. Rs three lac is being released for each toilet. The place should be in the name of the panchayat. A permission letter will be required if it is privately owned,” said Prasanna H, chief executive of zilla panchayat, Udupi.

“Three toilets are being constructed at Udupi, eight in Byndoor, five in Kaup, ten in Kundapur, three in Brahmavar, eight in Karkala and four in Hebri. Rs 2.10 lac is being received under Bharath mission project and the remaining Rs 90,000 are being paid per toilet by the respective panchayats under 15th finance commission,” he said.

“The open defecation can be stopped by constructing community toilets. There is no set goal in numbers for them. The proposals will be inspected and the funds will be released for them,” he said.
