Udupi: Oral health awareness, education and screening program at Kasturba Hospital

Udupi, Apr 17: Worldwide, April month is observed as Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Oral cancer is the cancer that affects the mouth. It can develop on any tissue, including gums, tongue, or lips. Early detection and treatment significantly improve the outcomes. As part of this, an awareness education and free screening camp has been organized at Kasturba Hospital Manipal from April 17 to 21.

Its inaugural programme was organized on Monday at Kasturba Hospital Manipal. Dr Anand Venugopal, chief operating officer, Teaching Hospital, MAHE, Manipal inaugurated the program. Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Kasturba Hospital released the information brochure.

Dr Devaraj K, associate professor, Department of Head and Neck Surgery gave an overview on oral cancer and said that the mouth is one of the most important organs. Every substance we consume enters the body through the mouth. So maintaining oral health is very important. Tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption, and gutka consumption, etc lead to mouth cancer. He also talked about the importance of early detection. The camp will be held from 10 am to 1 pm every day till April 2023, he informed and urged the general public to make use of it.

Dr Suresh Pillai, professor, Dr Shama Shetty, and Dr Kinjal Shankar Majumdar, assistant professor, Department of Head and Neck Surgery were present.
