Bangalore: P T Usha’s Statement Disheartens Athlete Ashwini Akkunji

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jul 14: Performances of Ashwini Akkunji from Udupi district, who rose to stardom by winning medals in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, have come under clouds. Even those who had failed to sit up and take notice of this golden girl’s contributions to the country then, have not lost time in heaping criticisms on her for failing in the dope test. Ashwini, whose future has suddenly turned bleak because of the controversy, and other athletes like her, are distraught at the onslaught of  adverse comments being passed against them by even seasoned athletes, at whom they have been looking at for support for boosting their sagging morale.

“I have immense respect for P T Usha. I never expected her to give derogatory statements at athletes who have come up by sweating it out. I am really hurt from the statement issued by this celebrated athlete against my performances,” Ashwini said, speaking to Kannada daily, ‘Udayavani’.

Ashwini reiterated her earlier claim that she had never knowingly consumed any performance-enhancing drugs or steroids. “In the incident concerning failing of the dope test, I was not to be blamed. I confirm I did nothing wrong. The fact that people have begun doubting the genuineness of my past glorious performances has hurt me very much,” Akkunji added. She said she is determined to come out of the dumps and hit back her critics with her future performances.

She said that she had taken 59.49 seconds to cover 400 metres in Commonwealth Games, and improved the same to 56.15 seconds in Asian Games. “There is nothing superhuman in this feat, as termed by Usha. I have worked hard for a number of years to achieve this goal. I feel P T Usha could not digest the fact that another athlete from the country has been matching up to her celebrated performances, and that might have tempted her to issue insinuative statement against me,” Ashwini felt. Ashwini also does not rule out the chances of professional jealousy having played a role behind the doping scandal involving several athletes.

Akkunji said she is aware about the ill-affects of the performance-enhancing drugs and that she and other athletes never consume anything without consultation and guidance. She also questioned as to how would she have known if some drugs had been mixed with the food served to her. Pooh-poohing the doubts expressed about her previous records, she said she had undergone doping test after winning gold medal in Commonwealth Games and twice more, during the Asiad in China. “I also provided samples for the doping tests twice at the Grand Prix tournaments. I have never hesitated in exposing myself to these tests whenever called upon. I have however, no clue how substances of banned drugs got into my system, as found during the test conducted at Bangalore,” she said.

Ashwini said she is very much distraught by the doubts expressed by people about the genuineness of her past performances. “Just because Pakistani bowler, Shoaib Akhtar, had failed doping test once does not mean that all his performances were aided by drugs. It is wrong to link them. After the episode, I spoke to coach, Yuri Ogorodnik. I have found that he was innocent. He is sad at the unexpected developments,” she added.

Well when the whole world is watching, how can P T Usha make a statement like that. I is comman sense the Ashwin has passed all the test when she won the compitition. This shows the support the vetran athlets give to the new generation. Now it shows the jelously that is stopping our up comming athlets from geting Gold in Olympics.
So Aswini we belive you when u say you are victimized. Dont stop praticing. Show the world that you can do it..... We welcomed you like a Star when u brought us gold & so we do stand by you in ur hard time.. God bless You......

    Hi Girish,
Know that, drugs could be mixed in food/drinks quite often even without the knowledge of Athlete. Indian Athletes tend to believe when their coach/trainter tell them eat or drink of whatever they give them without realizing if they are banned substances. She might or might not know about it.
She needs to come clean about what her nutrition was or who provided them. Again not all athletes are having a great knowlege of banned drugs.

Even after committing the nuisance, I don't know how she repelling her mistake. It's not a small one, its a question of our nation's prestige. Because of this kind of ignorance and negligence attitude she did the mistake. Now she has only one option i.e. again she have to prove what she is in the coming tournament. I mean after the punishment.

I agree with Mr. Ismail and Mr. Dave. Ashwini took drugs and got caught. Urine and blood samples don't lie. Human beings lie. Plain and simple. Ashwini is evading the issue by blaming PT Usha rather than taking responsibility for her mistake. You cannot learn from your mistakes and improve if you don't take responsibility for your mistakes. In fact, Ms. PT Usha is right in doubting your past performances becuase you have tested positive for drugs. Blaming her doesn't improve your situation.
I also agree with Mr. Dave. after the drugs have disappeared from your system (6 months) try to get back and regain your record timing. You are very talented and gifted. Please be safe in the very corrupt world of International athletics.

It is really unwarranted statement of PTUsha. when she performed well, every Indian praised and supported her because, we thought and think even today that it is an Indian who does it. but PT Usha thinks, she is still belongs to only to Keral and not to the Nation and donot want athlets from other part of the country to flourish. it is high time she takes a back seat and get retire than give comments, which are hardly matters now to any Indians, which I believe.

It is unfortunate that Ashwini has suddenly been tested positive and now this issue. Lets be with Ashwini in her bad times even now, coz she is our pride and our land gift to us. Like I said earlier, she may not be fully aware of performance suppliments given to her, like to any other athlete.

It is very much prevalent in sports that coaches and medical advisors knowingly advise athletes to take medicines with banned substances. May be PT Usha has expressed her views, lets not judge either of them with our judgements and let down Ashwini.

Since Ashwini still claims that she is innocent, we will have to give her time to come out clean from this scam. Are we aware under what circustances have these tests been performed?? were they professional or were they out of any other criteria??

Can anyone confirm that other athletes who are not caught are innocent? Why the reports of B'lore investigations of random tests not been published as yet??

Let us not add salt to Ashwini wound at this time, but be with her. If we can not do anything to be with her, at least let us give her the moral support that she needs now, during her trials.

Dear Ismail Perinje, your comments are very silly and immature you will not know unless you are in her shoes. I have been a sports person and I can understand her feelings and quite rightly if the drugs are mixed in the food then you will not know.

In this competitive world there are people in position want fame and they take advantage like this and when it comes to light the minister is exhonorated and the people like Ashwini become victims. Ashwini we are with you and you can bounce back and people like Ismail are always there who keep criticizing but do not add any value.

After 6 months(time needed for the drug to disappear from the system) call the top Indian athletes in your field for a RACE-(challenge) after giving your blood as well as urine samples to prove you have not continued to take dope.  If you achieve your best timing in it then only we believe you have been wronged. Keep training till then-focussed to attain glory.  Otherwise we consider you are concealing the truth & are lie-ing .

Dear Ashwini, Don't lose heart. You can't turn the clock back. Your past performance at the international level is the certificate for your achievement. It is disappointing to note P.T. Usha's derogatory (out of jealous) comments.

Dear Ismail K Perinje, see comments "Shoaib Akhtar, had failed doping test once does not mean that all his performances were aided by drugs”. My friend, it is easy to dump someone when she/he is at low. Remember there are many unknown's in this dope test incidents. If we read reports on the whole issue there are many loose ends.

Therefore she may or may not be directly responsible. Though I am not giving her clean chit I strongly believe that we must not allow this girl's talent goes waste. Instead of punishing it is always better to reform/correct. Let us encourage her to come out this testing time and bring fame to our beloved country.

The whole system itself needs overhaul. So many things in ones normal diet have tendencies to have banned drugs.Even a strong coffee for instance or poultry that is now fed with hormone based feed!
Instead of indiviual who is banned for doping it should be the athletic body who should be made responsible. If a 100m athlete turns positive they should ban the organisation from representing 100m for certain time. Then the organisations will ensure proper guidance and monitoring is provided for the athletes they put forward.
