Woman farmer in Chikkamagaluru ends life after alleged harassment by micro-finance company

Chikkamagaluru, Oct 7 (IANS): In a tragic incident, a woman farmer in Chikkamagaluru district committed suicide after being allegedly harassed by staffers of a microfinance company to repay a loan, police said on Saturday

The deceased has been identified as 64-year-old Deviramma and the incident occurred in Tangali village of Kaduru taluk.

According to the police, the victim had taken a loan of Rs 78,000 from the Grameena Koota Finance Company.

As she was in crisis due to crop failure, she has not been able to pay an instalment for a month.

The company staffers had been coming to her house ever week since and allegedly harassed and pressured her to repay the loan.

Not being able to take the torture, the woman hung herself inside her house.

A case had been lodged against the microfinance company staffers Shankar Nayak, Usha, and Rubina with the Kadur police station.

Chikkamagaluru has been declared a drought-hit district by the state government.

According to official statistics, three farmers have committed suicide due to the drought.

Several such incidents have taken place in our country since ages.. The main reason for this is the banks hire recovery agents to collect the pending loan amounts from the customers. Several private banks have multiple agencies wherein the customers are mentally harassed through them. Banks have to themselves keep the staffs who indeed have to be advised to study the financial position of the loan pending customer and give them some time to repay their debts. I can still recall an incident few months ago wherein a girl purchased a house without knowing that there were loan installments on the same, later commited suicide as the recovery staffs came to her house and harrassed her on the day of her house warming. Let not such incidents take place in future...

Never take loan from finance companies. They are dangerous and ruthless, please approach national banks. I know of several people who have suffered after taking loan from private financiers. Never trust them They are cruel people who only need money.

I don't find any logic in your opinion; the difference it will make with nationalised banks is they will be a little less in their approach; hounding a debtor they will definitely hound through the help of contractual recovery agents/goons!!

These people are recovery agents hired on commission basis; here the issue probably was that the loaning society had given her a loan without any collateral, but on higher interest!! In such a case, the society has no recourse to the legal route except hounding; BUT IT'S VERY UNFORTUNATE THAT SO MANY FARMERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE ENDING THEIR LIVES BECAUSE OF CROP FAILURE; IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY INSURANCE COVER, THE SITUATION OF THESE HARD WORKING FARMERS IS VERY PRECARIOUS! ONLY THEIR FAVOURITE GODS CAN SAVE THEM!!
