2023 Global Hunger Index: India ranks 111th; govt calls report 'flawed'

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS): India has ranked 111th out of the 125 countries on the 2023 Global Hunger Index (GHI), slipping four places since last year. However, the government has rejected the report calling it "flawed" and "erroneous".

"With a score of 28.7 in the 2023 Global Hunger Index, India has a level of hunger that is serious," said the global report released on Thursday by Concern Worldwide and Welt Hunger Hilfe, Non-Government Organisations from Ireland and Germany respectively.

In 2022, India ranked 107 out of the 125 countries.

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, in a statement, refuted the claims and said that the index "continues to be a flawed measure of ‘Hunger’ and does not reflect India’s true position".

The GHI report ranked Pakistan at 102, Bangladesh at 81, Nepal at 69 and Sri Lanka at 60. South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa were the regions with the highest hunger levels.

"The index is an erroneous measure of hunger and suffers from serious methodological issues. Three out of the four indicators used for calculation of the index are related to the health of children and cannot be representative of the entire population," the ministry said.

"The fourth and most important indicator ‘Proportion of Undernourished (PoU) population’ is based on an opinion poll conducted on a very small sample size of 3,000," it added.

Meanwhile, the report also counted India with the world’s highest child wasting rate of 18.7 per cent, indicating acute undernutrition.

The rate of undernourishment in India stood at 16.6 per cent and under-five mortality at 3.1 per cent.

The report also said that the prevalence of anaemia in women aged between 15 and 24 years stood at 58.1 per cent

"Two other indicators, namely, Stunting and Wasting are outcomes of complex interactions of various other factors like sanitation, genetics, environment and utilisation of food intake apart from hunger which is taken as the causative/outcome factor for stunting and wasting in the GHI," the ministry said.

It noted that there is hardly any evidence that the fourth indicator, namely, child mortality is an outcome of hunger.

The ministry said that since April 2023, the measurement data of children under five years uploaded on the Poshan Tracker has consistently increased - from 6.34 crore in April 2023 to 7.24 crore in September 2023.

"The percentage of child wasting, as seen on the Poshan Tracker, has been consistently below 7.2 per cent, month-on-month, as compared to the value of 18.7 per cent used for child wasting in the Global Hunger Index 2023," the ministry said in the statement.

India will continue to struggle with poverty as long as discrimination against OBCs and Shudras persists. Unless we break free from the Brahminical mindset, our prospects of becoming a significant or even a small global power will remain limited. On several occasions, it seems that countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have more effective social governance systems in place. Even when we look at our Hindu neighbor, Nepal, we still find the influence of the Brahminical order and superstitions prevailing.

Reports like these are prepared based on govt own declared data. So, anyone saying report is fabricated, need to familiarise themselves. Based on data such as this countries form policies to improve quality of life. From Yr 1947 to 2014, we have come a long way. But, from 2014 it is different world. Anything comes in favor of the country, credit goes to Modi, though he has done nothing about it. If it is positive, then report straight away thrashed as fabricated. People these days facing herculean hurdles, are no longer dismissive of Modi led BJP failures. India realized finally BJP has to be defeated, to get the country back in track.

Truth is always bitter. The government is always in a denial mode. The moment the Government doesn't accept the report and gives statements as 'flawed' the officials get complacent and let things go on as they are.

As per the Government of India’s National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS 5), ‘Thirty-six percent of children under age five years are stunted; 19 percent are wasted; 32 percent are underweight. Children born to mothers with no schooling and children in the lowest wealth category are most likely to be undernourished’. India has one of the worst rates of child malnutrition in the world, with one third of malnourished children globally being Indian. (stunted meaning not normal growth, wasted meaning very very weak due to malnutrition). For the last many years Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Srilanka have better ranking than India.

A favourable report, irrespective of the size or reach or popularity, will be broadcast day and night by the godi media. They will throw their arms in the air and thump each other's backs and say what a great nation we have suddenly become and all the progress started from 2014. An unfavourable report, even from some highly respected think tanks who have done proper analysis and given the methodology and figures etc. will not see light of the day. It will be disputed by the goverment, lapped up by the andh bakhts and ignored by the godi media for fear of offending the powers that be.

May be This is 10 years old report they are just manipulating without going in deepth. I think they dont have enough sampling methods to evaluate 200+ nations. India is a large country they might have taken samples from some remote areas, or Dharavi slum where in peoples doesnt eat Pizza and ate rice which these UN people consider as poverty. The western world still sees india as a snake charmer, dharavi slum, kamatipuram area only on the other side we are super power which they are not ready to accept How hunger prevails in a country where in average unskilled labour earns 800 per day, govt is giving them free education/hospital insurance etc

How hunger prevails in a country where in average unskilled labour earns 800 per day, - This yardstick applies to DK/ Udupi Coastal, Bangalore urban in Karnataka. In some parts of Northern Karnataka, the average labour is Rs. 400 and no continuous daily wages jobs.

This is not 10 years old data. The 2022 report put India at 107th position among 121 countries. It is based on Global Hunger Index(GHI), which is computed using four indicators- prevalence of calorie undernourishment, stunting below the age of five, wasting below the age of five and under- five mortality rate. Most of the data is also picked up from governments own report. As far as hunger is concerned I am a witness of that where while inspecting mid day meal service in one of the unaided school in the financial capital, that is Mumbai, more than a dozen old people were waiting at the entrance of the school during mid day meal serving time with their food bowl to receive the left overs of mid day meal. It was a pitiable scene.

The report is highly accurate. BJP is refuting it to gain an advantage in the upcoming election. I would like to address Mr. Raj in the comments section and request him to visit the villages and witness the plight of numerous underprivileged children who cannot afford two meals a day.

fyi i am staying in a village. Govt is giving free ration to all the underprivileged and also during covid the same was done. Even you go to wenlock govt hospital the meals are provided free for the patients and also the caretakers are taken care by institution like Snehalaya and Karunya. So pls wide your horizon from politics and try not to bash the country based on DUSTBIN reports.

Perhaps your village government is providing food, but that doesn’t mean the entire country is being taken care of. Have you visited villages in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, such as Bahraich, Balrampur, Alirajpur, Jhabua, etc.? People there are malnourished and have nothing to eat. Just because your society is well-fed doesn’t mean your village represents the whole of India.
