Mangalore, Sep 24: Based on reliable information, Bajpe police inspector, Dinakar Shetty and other police personnel arrested Mohammed Iqbal (30), a resident of Kavoor Shantinagar in the city, on Friday September 23. Reportedly, he used to provide telephone numbers of leading entrepreneurs from the city to Madoor Isubu, an underworld fugitive, who is behind bars at present. It is said that Isubu continues to pose threats to businessmen through internet phone even after being lodged in jail.

The fact that Isubu, who was in Bellary jail since some months, and has presently been put up at the district jail here since a week for attending court hearings, was able to continue his activities even after he was remanded to judicial custody, has raised many eyebrows. Ahmed Shakir, a businessman from the city, had received a call on August 4, 5 and 6, demanding payment of three crore rupees as protection money. He was threatened of dire consequences if the sum demanded is not paid, Shakir had said in a complaint lodged with the policemen.

Iqbal had collected the telephone number of Ahmed Shakir, who deals in sand and based in Maravoor near Bajpe, and passed it on to Madoor Isubu. Isubu in turn, provided the same to Altaf from Mulki, presently living in Dubai, it is said. Under instructions from Isubu, Altaf had called Shakir through internet phone on August 4, 5, and 6, identifying himself to be a Chhota Shakil gang member. Shakir had filed a police complaint at Bajpe police station on August 9.

Mohammed Iqbal was named as the prime accused in the murder of Candle Santu. Reportedly, Candle Santu was killed by Mohammed Iqbal under instructions from Madoor Isubu. Iqbal, who was in jail for some time relating to this case, had tried to flee to a foreign country after getting released, but the policemen had foiled his attempt. The policemen said Iqbal faces a number of criminal cases in Bantwal and Kavoor police stations.

On being produced in a court here, Iqbal was remanded to judicial custody till October 14.
