Mangalore: Young Artists Impress at Daijiworld Weekly Drawing Contest

Mangalore, Nov 6: Young, budding artists had a memorable day on Sunday November 6 as they came up with some innovative art works at the Daijiworld Weekly Drawing Contest held at St Agnes College auditorium to celebrate Children's Day.

Daijiworld Weekly has been organising drawing contest for children every year ever since its inception in 2009.

Lancy Mascarenhas, well-known builder and philanthropist, who was the chief guest said in his address to the participants, "We are celebrating your success and your hidden talents ahead of Children's Day. You are the real chief guests although I am invited as the chief guest today."

He added, "Children have a special place in our lives, even Jesus Christ once told the parents not to keep children away from him, as children belong to the Kingdom of Heaven."

Hemacharya, editor-in-chief of Daijiworld Weekly while welcoming the guests and participants felt that the annual contest is getting bigger and better with each passing year, thanks to the overwhelming participation of budding artists and the support of parents and well wishers of the Weekly. "Daijiworld Weekly will continue its unique way of celebrating Children's Day and there is no looking back," he said.

Sr Supriya, vice-principal, St Agnes College and Rohan Monteiro of Property Infra Tech Pvt Ltd were the guests of honour. 

The contest evoked overwhelming response from about a hundred students across 23 schools in and around the city and 68 students eventually participated. The competition was conducted in two categories - juniors (class 5 to 7) and seniors (class 8 to 10).

Supriya Bhat from Theresa's School won the first place in the junior category, while Prajwal B and Sriraksha, both from Canara High School, bagged the second and third spots respectively.

In the senior category, Shubham Vernekar from St Aloysius High School won the top prize, while Mangala Nayak from Canara High School and Akshay Raj from St Aloysius High School won the second and third prizes respectively.

This apart, there were 20 consolation prizes, 10 in each category. In all, a sum of Rs 28,000 in cash was given away as prizes, along with certificates of merit.

The consolation prize winners received one year free subscription from Daijiworld Weekly. At the end of the contest children were treated to ice creams, courtesy Hangyo. 

William Pais of Orchid Art Gallery was the chief co-ordinator of the contest assisted by well-known artists, Ganesh Somayaji, general secretary of 'Artists Combined', a city based artists association and Jeevan A S in adjudicating the entries.

The participants were given themes on the spot, with a time limit of one hour and 15 minutes. The judges were highly impressed by the artworks of the children, and had a tough time deciding the winners.

On the occasionm Jeevan painted a picture of Someshwar beach, much to the amazement of the children.

Melvyn Rodrigues, director operations, Daijiworld, proposed the vote of thanks and Lesley Rego conducted the proceedings in his charismatic style.  
 
The contest was sponsored by Lancy Constructions.

The parents of the participants were also present and encouraged them with enthusiasm.

    Atleast desk top or table and chair should have been provided for child artist to do their work.
    Training should be imparted from young age in schools.
