Udupi, Nov 7: In raid conducted on Sunday November 6 by the personnel of district crime intelligence bureau (DCIB) under the directions of the district superintendent of police (SP) on an illegal slaughterhouse, the policemen arrested three persons and rescued 32 cattle. The slaughterhouse in question is located at Janata Colony of Padoor-Chandranagar in Kutyar village near Kaup.
The arrested men have been identified as Hasanabba (66), Yaseen (28), and Rahim (32), who were in charge of the slaughter house. Manjunath, a native of Shimoga, succeeded in giving the policemen a slip.
The raid was led by DCIB inspector, Ganesh M Hedge. SP, Ravikumar, also came on the scene a little later to provide moral support to the raiding party. The slaughterhouse owners, who were taken aback by this sudden development, managed to collect a large gathering from around the locality against the police action. They also tried to release animals from their tethers to allow them to run away. It is said that the gathering got engaged in a heated exchange of words with the policemen and the SP, claiming that the cattle had been brought together at the spot for Qurbani ritual during Bakrid. They also threatened the policemen of blocking their vehicles. The policemen went ahead with their task without giving in to the pressures.
Later, the policemen came under pressures from various quarters including politicians, to release the cattle because of Bakrid, it is said. The policemen however, stood their ground, saying that the acquisition of cattle was not backed by any documents.
Kaup circle inspector of police, B Cheluvaraju, and Kaup station house officer, Mohan Kottary, oversaw the law and order situation. A case was registered at Shirva police station. Investigation is continuing.
